Its more of a concern in the US, where DMV info is more public domain. We are somewhat protected here in Canada... The average Joe shouldn't be able to do ANYTHING with your license plate # (other than maybe phone you in to narc on you of course). But still, why take the chance? If you're posting pics of your car on the internet, it doesn't hurt anything to block it.

Now what's funny though is the people that go get personalized plates (of something very easily recognizable and memorable) and then they freak out about their plates being photographed!!.

Hi Josh,

Good post. I found this to be quite amusing. Personally I feel people block their plates out of paranoia. If one were to really step back and take a look, it is ludicrous. If one was so concerned about someone getting the plate number off the car, why drive it? Just leave it parked in a garage and under a car cover untill the end of time.

There are lots of ways to get a plate if one thinks about it. If you park somewhere to get something to eat, guess what is showing??? Yes, your plate. You are driving down the road or freeway, what is exposed? Your plate. If someone really wanted to find out where you lived, then they can just follow you home. Had that happen to me once. Ahhh....the angry tool in the Volvo, but that is a different story for another time.

I would agree with Jay inrespect to that we are protected by the privacy laws that do not allow the average person to be able to look up a plate number. In the US I believe that the DMV records are more accessible to the public.

To me, if someone wants to get my plate number, they will get it if I want them to have it or not. That is just my humble opinion.

It's true Mike. This is why I don't bother concealing plates when I take photos. Plus I usually never take less than a few hundred photos when I break out the camera and I'm not going through all of them to cover plates.

If you don't want photos of your plate posted when you take your car to a show, take the plate off.

Another reason entirely that everybody's missed thus far is the insurance companies. A few insurance companies have been known to be dinks about "modified" cars.

They go to car shows, autoslaloms, rallies, and even watch the classifieds, and write down the plates. They then check their databases to see if they're insuring any of these "modified" cars. If they find you, you get a registered letter, detailing how your insurance policy is being cancelled at the end of the month.

Allstate was particularly bad about that about 10 years ago.

So, guys got used to taking their plates off at autoslaloms and car shows to prevent this from happening to them.

Bad Egg
Almost any motor vehicle registry database in existance has been compromised at one time or another. That goes for Canada as well. All it would take is a well placed person with database access. Just because a person is paranoid, it doesn't mean someone isn't out to get them.

We could just as well ask why doesn't everybody on this board and everywhere else on the internet just use their real names instead of made up user names?

Also, I've read stories of Mitsubishi denying warranties on cars attending auto-x and drag events.

SilverNeonRacer
Don'tcha remember the news story out of the states, where 2 ricers got into an argument on a chat board, much like this.

Buddy with a decent looking car, put up pics of his car, but with a hack job wanna be ricer intrepid, got mad, and started flaming the guy about how his tint and this and that was illegal, and the intrepid kid's dad was a state trooper, and the other guy got pulled over within blocks of his house by the other kid's dad....

Well............

Just recently over on one of the Porsche boards someone stole one of the members modified 944 turbo.

It was later recovered by police.

It was a member on the board that stole it.

This fellow was definitely attracted to many of the specialty parts on that car and decided to steal it.

Something to think about.

This has happened on revscene numerous times. They don't even have to scope out the car because the owner has posted a mod list along with a picture of their car right in front of their house.

Hi Terry,

Yes, it has happened every now and then. The best part was this guy came ripping around a corner with his kids in his car and almost sideswiped me while I was coming to a stop. Then he had the balls to turn around his Volvo, follow me to my house, get out of his car yelling and screaming at me cause "I was in the wrong" for just being there and he was going to call the police and tell my parents. He accused me of racing down a residential road on numerous occasions. I told him point blank. "Are you done now, If you like I can call my parents for you and they will laugh at you too. I can also call the police for you if you really want. You chased me down and followed me to my house." He did not like that, After a few more min, I just turned my back on him and walked into my house and locked the door. He was left holding his pud screaming in my neighbourhood like a crazy person infront of his kids. It was priceless! The police never were called I assume as they never called nor showed up.

As for everyone else there are always clues one can look for in pictures to find out a location of a vehicle or where it may live. As for the insurance aspect at shows... That would take a lot of work to run the plates with each insurer to see whom is in violation of their policy. If they really wanted, they could just ask a few questions to the owner of the vehicle directly, or people around it to find out who the owner really is and what has been done. See where I am going with this one? I am not worried as I have always driven my modded cars to my insurance co. I have had no problems dealing with them and they know what I have done to my cars.

As for the cars being stolen, well if someone wants a car bad enough, they will get it, no matter what type of protection you have for it.

I see everyones points and respect them. This is just how I feel.

you could always throw a couple strips of duct tape over the plate, or fold the edge of a paper and hang it over the top.

Josh is this about that guy you almost hit and want to do something about it? Sorry I wouldn't go beat him up for you:dunno:
