Doing leakdown test - Click HERE for Original Thread

Kadaj
I was just wondering how hard is it to do a leakdown test? I have no idea on how to do one.

Its not hard but you have to have some certain tools, you could get someone else to do it for you for pretty cheap I would asume.

Where can i go to get it done?

lots of places do them, personally I've had great experience with Abbey Road Automotive of 170st and just south of 118ave. But each to there own and I don't think they'd be the cheapest, call around to some shops and get some prices.:)

JoeBlow
here is a site on how to make one and use one if i have one a site witha bit more detail on how to use it but would have to find it. let me know if this is enuf or if you want the other site.

A leakdown test is where you pressurizze your combustion chamber and see how much leaks out over a certain time period. It's like a compression test is some ways but is better. If your car is burning oil it could be afew things(rings, valve seats ect) depending on when its burning it and how much ect.

Ok cause heres the deal. My car burns alot of oil only when accelerating hard and reaching high RPMs. What do you think could be the cause of that? Im using non-synthetic.

Well this is just a guess but I'd bet it's your piston rings man. How many km's on ur engine? Does ur dipstick ever blow out a bit? I used to have an extreme case of blow-by on my mx-6 cuz it had sooo many km on it the rings were toast, the dipstick would blow out after some hard driving. But then again it could be ur valve seals, hmm either way it's bit of work.

They sell leakdown testers at Princess Auto. Basically all you have to do is find exactly TDC power, thread it into the spark plug hole, turn the knob to add air to the cylinder & just listen to where it is coming out. The guage will tell you what sort of percentage of leakdown you have. The box I think even has a reference chart for different problems.

What is the cost of fixing the piston rings? Valve seals?

cheap if you do it yourself, but to do that stuff, you need specialty tools and know how, and another head gasket, but if you were to take it somewhere, its the labour thats goin to kill you, takes time to do that stuff, call around i suppose

basiclly what he said^^^ cheap if u do it, expensive if a shop does it. Its really not that difficult aslong as u have the time to not drive ur car, plus its a great learning experience. I know 16year olds who can pull it off, so if you know the basics you should be able to do it.

Doing it would involve removing the head? Cause im not too sure as to how to do it.

Ron@Revolution
Doing a ring job should not be done if your not confortable doing that kind of work. Take it to a shop it well be cheaper in the long run.
