2006 Honda Civic EX 4 Door Sedan redesigned - Click HERE for Original Thread

GOT BOOST
Hi Everyone,

As I am searching for a newer/ brand new vehicle I thought I would post my reviews on the cars I have test drove.

The specs as tested:

2006 Honda Civic EX 4 Door Sedan
Automatic transmission
Alabaster Silver Metallic Exterior
Interior Grey Fabric
Engine 1.7L 4-Cylinder SOHC 16Valve i-VTEC
140 HP @ 6300 RPM
Fuel Consumption stated 7.8 L/100 kms City 5.7 L/100 KMS Highway.
Tires and rims P205/55/R16 with Aluminum wheels.
Package considering: EX 4 door sedan Price $25,899 According to Honda website. Exact figures to be determined.

Test Drive length 30 min.

From the exterior this car is very sharp and commands attention. Once seated inside this car, one is surrounded by an array of comfort and visual effects. The car truely sucks you in and makes you become one with it. The steering wheel was comfortable and felt nice on the hands and had lots of padding. It did not feel like a "value priced" steering wheel. Handeling was fantastic, acceleration was impressive. Suspension and steering were very responsive. Braking was quick and slowed the car down quickly. Out of the lights this car took off like a rocket as you watched digital spedometer climb quickly and with out effert to the speed limit. I was anxious to take it on the highway.

On the highway this car is quiet and accelerated from 80km/hr to 110 km/hr quickly. It held highway speeds with the cruise on quite well. For an automatic and this size of engine I was thrilled. I have always favored the interior of the new Civic's from the brocheurs and online photographs. However when I sat in it and was driving it, I was extremely impressed. I was not expecting that amount of comfort and quality out the Civic. No offence to you civic owners. The gauges were very visually pleasing and easy to read and look at.

There was plenty of leg room in the front and rear, head room was plentyfull with out the sunroof.

The only real con of this car is that you do not realize how quick you accelerate in the cabin unless you are watching the spedometer climb. It is quite easy to exceed the speed limit and not realize it. I suppose that this is why you have giant digital spedometer staring you in the face. Honda has done a very nice job with the production of this car.

Overall for the money for the car it is a good car and fun to drive. When compared to other cars in the market for similar price, I feel the Civic is well priced.

Would I purchase this car? It is 1st on my list of cars to purchase.

Thanks for reading,

Mike Nikolai

haha shut up ricer...

Anyway Mike, I know you're comparing the Civic to the Yaris. Both are great cars, but the Civic simply offers a better value when you consider it only costs a few thousand more yet offers way more in terms of amenities, power, etc...the gas mileage between the two is similar too.

Hi GTS Jeff,

I hear what you are sayign and I am thinking along the same lines. I am comparing the cars price range, value, options, power etc.

According to Honda, the Civic's are supposed to have retained 72% of the value of the car 5 years later. This I find interesting. I believe this fact is due to the high demand and popularity of the Civic's.

There was a nice 2006 Red 2 Door coupe at Millwoods Honda last night. :D

There are a few other cars on the list to test drive. A car will not be purchased for at least a month. Right now I am just researching and test driving. So far the Civic has come out ahead!

Make sure you check out the Mazda 3. Nicer looking IMO and you have a bit more power and viturally the same price. Plus you can get heated leather seats in the 3.

It's not rice, it's art ;)

Anyways, I read the consumer report for the best/worst cars of 2006 and they voted civic for the best sedan under 20,000. However there are always more problem when a new generation is introduced, it would be better if you wait one or two years until they fixed some of the bugs.

Anyways, go with what feels good to you. Good Luck!!

^^^ Honda and Toyota have a habit of getting things right the 1st time... Not like GM or Ford.

However, I don't really agree with the cars being compared. Test a Corolla against the Civic, not the Yaris. The Yaris is an entry level car, it's meant to compete against an accent, kia, etc, not civics and Mazda 3's.

Why would you compare a 25k civic against a 21k Yaris? A 21k Yaris isn't a good buy. You CAN get one hell of a lot nicer corolla for that price. Hell for 18.5 you can get a corolla CE (with the C package) with air, cruise, power windows/locks and a 5-speed. What else do you need?

Why would you look at an auto civic? Honda has one of the best 5 speeds in the business...

These are just some questions that I'm thinking after reading both of your reviews. Otherwise, good reviews

Hi SilverZ24,

I may also need to check that car out too. I had not considered the Mazda 3. I had a 2000 Mazda Protoge as a rental car for a few weeks back in 2000. It was good car. Another car we are considering is the Hyundai Elantra. I would pleased with that car when I had it as a rental last summer.

Chu77,

I hear what you are saying. The car is not for me. I have too many cars as it is! The car is for my lady. If it was my choice I would more than likely go with the 2 Door coupe 5 speed Civic. :D

Can't stop the spin,

I hear what you are saying. Reason for testing these cars and comparing them is to see what value and options and price they come to. I agree, with the $21,000.00 one can move into the Corolla range. Infact the Corolla Type S ia another one that we are considering. We will go back and test drive it sometime this week.

These test drives are part of the process of elimination. We came accross the Yaris when we were cruising the car lots on Sunday. (More like jumping the fences and avoiding the hounds)

As for the auto, again she prefers to drive auto. If it were my call, it would be stick. As it was so politely put to me last night after I had picked everything out on the Civic. "I am not purchasing the car for you to drive. It is my car". So yes, it will be an auto 4 door! Yes, I did get owned.

She is looking for something that is not priced too high, fuel milage is important but not the end all be all. A vehicle that looks nice and is fun to drive. For long trips we can take the Avalon, or the supra if I can get it to run for more than 10 kms with out the turbo going!

On a sidenote - a guy here a work bought a new Elantra for himself, and a new Corolla for the wife. They drive 100KM/day, at least, and the only category the Elantra wins out in is mileage. It's quite a bit better (But the Toyota tech's can't explain why) than the Corolla.

He was pleased with his Elantra, but still said he would rather have his Corolla. This is even further entrenched in his mind, because the block heater Hyundai installed, they tightened the bolts too much which eventually caused the antifreeze to leak out and the engine to overheat, costing thousands in warranty work. Not a fault of the car, but a fault of the dealer.

If you're considering Hyundai, why not a Sonata as well? I think that would be in your price range...

Hi Everyone,

Rather than starting a new thread I will just resurect this one.

It is official. Today we purchased the 2006 Honda Civic EX.
It is the 4 door sedan Tango Red and auto. Sure it is the Chick Stick, but it is a very fun car do drive. :D After the final test drive today we returned the demo car with the tires smoking and rotors glowing, it was decided that this car is going to join our automotive family. :D This car exceded my expectations and demands I put it through on the 25 min test drive. I already have a few upgrades planned for this beast! :D

The car will be picked up on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

Thanks for reading,

Mike Nikolai

my mom got an 'o6 civic the moment they came out. i remember the first day we took it out all the stares now it's just another civic. i really like the feel of it the bucket seats are comfortable the steering feels nice everything is perfectly placed. it's a really nice car.

congrats Mike! just curious, did you look at the Impreza at all?

Inzane
Congrats Mike!

I'll probably be waiting awhile for my next daily driver, but Honda may have just the ticket... I'm already quite enamoured with the TSX. We almost bought one last summer when we were shopping for my wife's new car. The only thing holding us back was the (relative) lack of power.

Well, rumor has it that Honda's new 2.3L turbocharged engine may find its way into the TSX for 2008+. If there's any truth to that, that could very well make it the perfect car for me (other than its FWD... but I could overlook that for a daily driver).

Love the styling, love the size, love the interior, love the gearbox, love the handling, etc. I could go on and on. Fix that last element (power) in the equation and...

Sorry, I guess I was hijacking...

So Mike, how the heck did you go from being a "Nissan guy" to now being a Toyota AND Honda guy?

For shame! :p

Hi Edwin,

Thanks. She is looking forward to the car! We briefly looked at the imprezza's and test drove the Mazda 3. She liked the 3, but really enjoyed the Civic.

Savage,

Yes, soon there will be alot of them on the road. We were testdriving back in April and researching then. They are a fun car to drive and even though it is Auto, I really did not mind it that much. I would have prefered the SI 2 Door coupe in 5 speed, but I have been promptly reminded that I will not be the primary driver of the car and IF I AM LUCKY she will let me drive it. hmmm.... Perhaps a quick trip to the Honda dealer to pick up another set of keys........ ;)

Inzane,

No worries about the thread hijacking. :D I will not quote my rule book at you............... yet. Interesting find on the TSX. Sounds like that could be quite a bit of fun for a daily driver!

As for the Nissan's they were still considered. We did look at a few, but overall she really enjoyed the Civic. When she is dropping fat stacks of cash, I can exert all my influence on her, but she seems to be immune from it and puts me back in my place quite quickly! As for myself.... I still love the Nissan's too. Great cars (except the new Sentra) Who knows if the Avalon kicks the bucket or gets written off, the Maxima or Altima SE-R may be a suitable replacement! :D.

Which reminds me, It has been a while since I was at the last Z club meeting. I will show up at the next one! :D
