bolting on a body kit (Cavalier) - Click HERE for Original Thread

chevyguy
Lots of cars have body kits on them, most look really sweet. I was wondering how hard it actually is to install them. It seems that on my car 2000 cavalier(yah its a cavalier, yes im proud of it), its hard to not only find the bolts that hold the front/rear bumper covers on but also taking them off would be a challenge. Lots of ppl at 780tuners have them, that ive seen from pics, so just fill me in please. also im lowering the car next weekend when i dont work, 2 inches in the front, 2.5 inches in the rear, could i get away with just that? :D

You're going for a Body Kit.. AND you're gonna lower it 2-2.5"

wow.. I hope you have Nice roads.. or.. a kit that doesn't hang down too low...

I'd try and mount the kit first.. And see were it sits... Then Think about lowering it.

bahaha, not really. I went through a learning experience with a mugen style kit on my lowered lude and it still hasn't gone bye bye.

My eclipse has an approx. 2" drop and a low kit to start with that I use as my daily driver throughout the summer. Take it from me, if you want to do this and use it as a daily driver, be prepared to limit where you can drive the car by 3/4's, be prepared to piss alot of people off and almost cause accidents regularly as you crawl into parking lots, have to reverse away from speed bumps, slam on the brakes in the middle of the road or swerve away from large pot holes, etc. Here's a pic of mine to give you an idea:

Adjustable coilovers wouldnt be a bad idea as you could manually increase/decrease the height when you want. I am either looking at coilovers or air ride suspension as after 2 years of driving the car like this in the summer months I'm sick of it.

Good reference for jbodies (the platform of your car) is either www.jbodyalberta.com or www.j-body.org

And as to lowering your car and a body kit, give it a go with just lowered. if you still want to run a kit after that, go for something that doesn't sit too low (ie not drift kit).

To remove the front, i Kno that there are 4 plastic snap fastners under the hood between the headlights, and an additional two bolts on the inside of the bumper holding it to the fenders directly behind the headlights.

I never removed the rear on mine, so I couldn't tell you that, but I'd assume that it would be something similar.

Cheers,

Evan.

hey wubba_65 did you change the front bumper of your cavalier to a z24 style? for now im just gonna stick with lowering it since a body kit is insanely expensive. oh that eclipse looks awesome, very nice

Thanks. If you do go through with a kit, be prepared to learn how to sand and fix fiberglass, and learn how to paint while you're at it. ;) Or just have lots of money to spend at the bodyshop.

I just removed my front bumer on my miata(pita) I found out how to get at the seamingly impossible bolts behind the lights, by removing the inner plastic gaurd in the wheel well the bolts are just barely acessible. Don't know if the cavy is even close but try that method if you think it would work.

chevyguy
yah that would work cause i had to take off the inner wheel wells when i installed my cold air. but my car is a 4 door and the kits look pretty much ugly, not gonna buy one just to say i have one, they dont look that nice. anyway my lowering kit is here and i have to trimm the bump stops?? thats gay didnt say that on their website, or catalog just in the instructions. hope this isnt something that can go terribly wrong
