Ok, so the past few days that I've read the newspaper Letters section I've come across somebody ranting about how pornography is causing the degradation of societal values. One of the major themes throughout these letters is that pornography, and pop culture makes us materialistic.
Pop Culture leading to materialism? Ok, that should be a fairly easy case to make, what with MTV and all those celebrity news shows. But pornography? "Wow those were some nice boobies! Make me wanna buy a toaster."
Are these people serious?
I think the real question here is, which is reflecting which? The society mirroring the media or vice versa? And coming back to vice, pornography is nothing new and it's not like it's making any kind of headway into the mainstream. So why is it that its existence and alleged undermining of values seems to have snuck up on so many people?
Now the thing I find disturbing is how many people there are willing to grant us the priviledge of hearing their poorly thought out opinions. They plead for a return to a rigtheous path and I wish they'd start using their heads. The quest to own more things started with the Industrial Revolution, not Pamela Anderson.
Another thing people gripe about is how the internet helps breed child molesters. Now I dunno about you guys, but it seems to me you've gotta be pretty fucked up in the first place to jerk off to 8 year olds. It's not like the internet gives them that idea. It came to them one day when they took a stroll past the schoolyard at recess. Now, in all fairness, the internet has created an easier way of disseminating these types of perveted materials. But the question that needs to be answered before anybody makes any kind of attack is whether this activity on the internet is the cause or byproduct of perversion. Seems to me people with pedophillic inclinations have been around for quite some time, so this too, is nothing new. Pedophillia is also extremely hard, and many say impossible, to treat. So I'm gonna venture a guess and say that it's not going anywhere any time soon unless we find a gene or something that causes it and then kill everyone that carries it.
After having said all that I'm noticing one common theme here: People seem to think that things should go back to the way they were in "the good ol' days".
And here's what I'm wondering: Were there ever any? Just how much has really changed?

Exactly. Archeologists have found ancient gliphs and cave writings from all kinds of societies that depict "pornography" in one form or another.
