torque steer - Click HERE for Original Thread

My car has HUGE torque steer. If your just normally going down the road and you step on it, the car INSTANTLY pulls hard to the left and then when you slightly turn the wheel back to the right, it makes a weird "rubbing" noise. But then when you let off the gas, it straightens back out. It only pulls when your on the gas. What do you guys figure? Bent axle(s)? I have heard noises in the tranny but not very much and not very loud either. Could something in the tranny be out of wack to cause torque steer? Torque steer is caused by uneven axle lengths so what I'm thinking is I'll attack the axles first and see what comes of it. Second opinions? Thanks guys.

Maybe try using better tires?
Cuz isn't torque steer due to uneven distribution of power to the wheels?

So if you have better tires, it'll take more power to create a bias in power distribution since the stickier compound will have less tendency to lose grip.

Maybe I'm wrong though :dunno:

If that is the case, I'm quite sure that a Limited Slip Differential will help :)

Ya I was gonna ask do u have lsd? I don't think ur axles would cuz the only on throttle problem ur having...I think if it was the axles you'd have the problem cosistantly.

I thought this was cuased by the rack and pinion steering starting to wear out. I asked about this on my last car because it was doing it when you first got going after a red light. The mechanic told me it's live with it or change out the whole rack and pinion steering system which is really expensive.

torque steer is ccause by uneven steering ars. cant remember what theyr called but the srt-4 eliminated torque steer by using this piece evenly.

Don't forget to check engine mounts. If they are damaged they will greatly increase any torque steer condition. Torque steer is generally caused by unequal axle length, improper weight shift & uneven drive axle angle between both sides.

that's most likely the knuckle pivot ballstud that's worn-out. it probably has another name, but i just can't think of it right now. lower ball-joint might be it whatever. lift the car and see if the wheel tilts when you push in/out with your hands

I was planning on checkin those tommorow. I was driving down 107th ave and sped up and shifted and I heard the loudest bang EVER! It rattled the fuckin dashboard! So I'm thinking an engine mount/ tranny mount is gone. I think I know which one it is too.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll let you know what I found out tommorow when I do an inspection.

Don't lie... Sunfire's can't torque-steer...

But Honda's Can.. lol

:p

Also.. Make sure one of your tires isn't bigger then the other buy a little bit.. ie: burnout and only one tire spins... that would cause it also.. BUT it would also cause you to veire back the opposite way when decellerating.

tq steer is caused by un-equal axles. the longer axle twist's under heavey load. the power used to twist the shaft resalts in a slower turning tire, causing the car to pull to that side. even a lsd will not eliminate tq steer but equal length axles wil almost elimanate this.

thanks chris, you said it for me.

way to know your shit.

That would be my guess. This also happened to my VW when the strut rod broke inside the shock (which had equal ength axles).

Soulfy, anything with more power than traction and no posi will burn one tire.

Ok, so first off I had time to look at the car after work. I loaded up the engine and could see the engine moving an excessive amount and found the front engine mount loose, but not enough to cause this problem though. So I put the car on the hoist and ran it in the air and looked over it and with the wheels turning, I put a sharp center punch up to the axle to see how "true" it was spinning and the left axle is indeed bent and wobbling. So I'm going to pick up a axle tommorow and put it in and see what happens. Thanks for all the replies guys.
