buy a "pickle fork" tool, and some new lower ball-joints. this will save you much cursing and time because you have to seperate that lower control arm from the knuckle so that you can get the shafts out. seperating them without wrecking the balljoints is definitely the harder way to do it. also, the nut that is in the centre of the wheel(which holds the axle in) is 1: very tight, and 2: very large. find out the size beforehand by taking the wheel off and measuring so that you can rent or borrow the proper size socket and breaker-bar. crappy tire happens to rent the sockets as a whole set for a deposit of about 60 bucks if i remember right, which has many common sizes for doing this exact job.
one last note, buy some GM synchromesh oil(or ATF if you got an auto tranny), because it will all leak out when you pop the axles out from the trany(which is done with a prybar btw). make damn sure that the new axles are "clicked" all the way into the tranny or else you will strip the teeth off when you go to drive it. I have seen that happen. |

I'm not sure specifically about civics, but on most vehicles you need to:
1. Take off the CV axle nut
2. Undo a pinch bolt for the lower balljoint.
3. Use a large bar to pry the lower control arm down & move spindle assembly out of the way.
4. Give the axle end a couple good smacks to remove the outside of the CV axle from the splines in the hub.
5. Use a large prybar & use a hard jerking motion to free the inner axle from the transaxle.
6. Reverse order.
** sometimes the calipers have to be taken off as well **
Maybe someone that actually has a Honda can be a little more specific.

A pickle fork risks wrecking the boot on the balljoint - you should be using the proper seperator
Most people just hit it with a really big hammer and it comes off though....

As well, make sure that you pull the axles out GENTLY without wrecking the axle seal. I'd personally change the axle seal at this point (Since you're there, and they cost $5)..... |
