Engine Swap - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
does anyone have/know people who have done engine swaps?
cuz i would like to hear from people who have experiences in swapping engines or done any major engine work
eg. the stuff to look out for, hardships, tips etc
thnx

Luong98
What do you need help in? I know ppl who has and are doing engine swaps.

REFLUX
it's not that i need help
one of my future goals is to do an engine swap (either a SR20DET into 240sx or B18C5 into Civic Hatch)
but i'd just like to hear from the people who have experience in it
like...where did they get the engine, where the swap is done, any common swapping problems to look out for...stuff like that

Alpha Gangsta
becareful of the hidden cost of engine swaps. If you choose to go with a readily available engine then it won;t be too bad but imagine ordering in an SR20DET for your car and then if something goes wrong. What are you gonna do then? Have fun ordering parts from Japan. Simple things like thermostats and gaskets are gonna be fun to replace. I was orignally gonna drop an SR20 into my 200 but I decided against it because of those factors.

Talented
Ya, also there are many "after" costs you have to look at also.. Like upgrading your clutch to handle the faster engine etc..

REFLUX
oh i c
well i was readin it somewhere that if ur gonna swap engines, have around 5g extra for stuff that u mite have overlooked
would that be a good buffer?

EG6 SiRII
i think it really depends what mods you've done to your car before the swap, can those parts handle or perform well with the new engine??
make a goal for yourself as in how far you'd want to go with this little project.
i got a swap in my 93 Civic HB last year, i'm still in the process of upgrading all my parts.

REFLUX
oh ok
well this is wat i have in mind for the project (cuz it's common...sorta)
a 5th or 6th gen civic hatchback, with a swapped in GSR or Type R engine (b18c1/c5)
i'm thinkin i'd need in terms of extra mods:
-new clutch
-exhaust
-maybe suspension
i know this is like..bare bones kind of shit but i'm assuming that gear ratios & shit r done along w/ tach adjustment etc etc

Luong98
You have to make sure that your car can handle that extra power. Your stock car was made to handle stock power. Lots of ppl ignore the fact that you have to upgrade your suspension and braking power. There's no use to have all that power and not being able to control it.

REFLUX
speakin of braking
wen u upgrade ur brakes
u gotta do brake alignment correct?
to make sure that one brake doesn't stop before the other
so what places would do that?
oh & also about stock cars handling stock power
how bout the chasis or a stock 5th/6th gen civic, w/ the extra power would anything need 2 b done there?
strut bars, anti-roll....

CRXguy
Any shops in Edmonton that are capable of doing a swap? I can prolly get an engine for a good price, it's just finding the RIGHT person to do it.
I suggest working on the suspension first. Springs, shocks, front/rear strut bars, etc. What's the point of having all that power, and not being able to use it properly.
When you swap, remember to change timing belt, water pump and such. Have all your parts ready so that it can be installed, so that you don't have to rip apart the engine after. Save alot of money.

MugenBoy
I don't recommend a GSR/Type R engine swap into a Civ.
Where I got my swap the previous car did one and he paid around 8g just for labor and additional parts on top of the purchase of the engine. But yeah as previously mentioned when u get a swap ther's a lot of shit u have to get too. Once u swap u can't stop coz there'll be constant need to upgrade/maintain the potential. Right now, i got the minimum requirements ... i got lots more to build on ... but gotta wait for the inflows
Just look around for a shop ... I got mine at TopTech and I got all my parts b4 bringing my car in ... trust me there's a crap load of parts u need especially if u have a gen4 like mine...
haha, i got no suspension or brake upgrades. I gonna be a unstable bomb on the street now...hahha

CRXguy
Definately! But it is possible to find a GOOD engine for a GOOD price. Just do a compression test before you buy. I'll be buying an engine through a friend of a friend, so I think I'll be safe.

have you guys considered doing work to your stock motor (porting your stock head and getting a custom cam, etc.) instead of an engine swap?
just curious about what other ways you can go to make power. _I bet the engine work would cost a lot less. _anyone looked into that?

It's way too under power to justify that amount of money.

CRXguy
I could slap on a Jackson Racing supercharger for about &#365000....and get maybe close to 160hp at the crank. But I'd rather do a swap and have 160hp to start off with.

Luong98
I really want to do a S13 SR20DET swap.

REFLUX
a SR20DET swap is one thing i would LOVE to see
####..anyone know of some SR20DET's in E-town?

TurboBlueNX
No DET's that I know of, The calgary 240's don't have DET's eiher (ie. the black one that was for sale with GTR brakes) he has a Turbo'd KA motor in it.
If there was, I would've snapped it up...

REFLUX
####...not a single one?

[/b][/quote]
There is actually 2 in Calgary that is DET and one in Edmonton. I talked to the guy from Edmonton last month at the autocross.
That black one that you are referring to is a KA turbocharged. Hey, it's for sale if anyone is interested. &#3630k.

CRXguy
Some guy by my friend's house is gonna buy the black 240. I personally wouldn't buy it. Why buy someone else's work?

darkman
I plan to do an engine swap for my car too sometime. What I'm worried about too is if it is going to last or even work. Then you got the huge cost of labour. Anyone know how much jsut the labour is for something like that?

CRXguy
On average, it should be around &#361000.

Unsure
I know of at least one DET in the city. The guy spend a mad amount of cash on it. His Wife drives it more than he does.. hahaha
As for Brake alignments... What you are looking for is a proportioning valve. If you get a Honda B series swap, the stock brakes will be ok if you get some rotors/aggressive pads. If you want bigger brakes (ie, TypeR) you might want to consider getting the calipers, Master cylinder and Proportioning valve so you can achieve the same brake feel as the type R. If you go with aftermarket (like Baer or willwood ) you may need an adj prop valve. I know of a guy with 4 pot calipers that didn't switch prop valves and he has no problems with them... and yes he drives his car hard.

for my two cents, ill post the reference material ive been studying...
http://www.celicasupra.com/7mgte/ -excellent write up, with a great amount of info on other concerns (braking, suspension, small items)
http://www.supras.com/~riemer/gte/reg.html -second gen supra god and his car.

both these guys are paranoid, but for good reason.
theres literally thousands of pages about honda engine swaps, and sport compact car mag has done a few with walkthroughs.

google for info and youll be amazed at how much there is

sr20det/240 swap gets pretty costly if you factor in labour, engine/drivetrain, and car itself. if i had the money i think i'd do this swap. i know there is atleast 4 or 5 240's with the swap here in calgary.

friend of mine drives this one
