proxy problems? - Click HERE for Original Thread

~30oZ~
I've got a problem logging hotmail, it gets up to the page where it asks you type in your email and password but after that, I get an error message

"Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at loginnet.passport.com.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

thanks for the help

it happens sometimes that they go down... is this persistent?
obviously you're still on the net cause you can type here, so i doubt that firefox is configured incorrectly. most likely, then if hotmail is not actually down, then you should check your security settings for things like cookies, and also anything to do with SSL should be set to normal

kill whatever firewall program and antivirus program that you have then try again. if it works, try re-installing them.
zonealarm, and Norton are a couple of bad ones for this

also try booting windows into "safe mode with networking" and see if anything changes. do this by pounding on "F8" just after the memory-count, hard drive detection screen as you power-up but before the graphic winXP loading screen

you have a program whether self installed or malware that is affecting your security settings and preventing you from accessing secure sites. download and install spybot search and destroy as well as adaware and run them remove any and all spyware instances and then reboot and try again to access the sites

~30oZ~
ok i'll try that. thanks:thumbup:

nothing...still the same result This is really starting to piss me off! I wonder what it could be:mad: :banghead: I think I'm going to have to get an tech to do something unless you guys have other ideas:dunno:

tried everything you suggested even found no malware.

suprising, well now that, that is out of the way you can start looking more seriously at your settings. The issue you are having is only with secure sites.
you can try and adjust the settings in your internet browser to lower the settings for security and privacy. Generally not recommended but it may help
also have you recently installed any new software that could have caused the issue to start? YOu could try a system restore and see if that helps.

sparkycivic
you could try maybe downloading and installing another internet browser and see if that can help. if it doesn't then there must be a networking driver or other software that is overriding the security stuff. please tell me/us what internet security programs and/or antivirus software you use or have used. Also tell about any adware and malware detectors you use/have used.
you would not believe just how many "spyware killers" there are out there which are ACTUALLY spyware and malware installers, and most have names that are closely related to the reputable ones.

last thing I installed was Motorola phone tools (and the internet worked fine) I use Norton anti-virus and Norton internet security which doesn't work anymore for some reason:dunno: and installed system works fron Norton to see if that would help solve my problem. but it didn't so I uninstalled it and I use spy bot S&D and Ad-aware. I if i do an system restore will I lose my programs I have on the computer now. and how do i do that.:(

Z3r03rr0r
system restore will only cause you to uninstall any programs that have been installed since the point you restore to. any files you have created since will still be there.
to get there
start->all programs->accessories->system tools->system restore

damn it! it was never turned on to start with for some reason I don't know why:mad:

sparkycivic
i never run system restore because malware have figured out how to infect the archives so you get re-infected every time you use restore, or even reboot. norton internet security will have to be un-installed and probably re-installed just to get your shit back to working condition again

it won't let me un-install it :dunno:

sparkycivic
why not?
is it asking for a password? or is it bithcing about files missing or something like that. you might try the original CD and that should detect the existing files and allow you to uninstall - hopefully

Ok well nothing worked...anyone know of a good place to get my POS PC fixed?

if you got the software I am sure one of the other tech guys that frequent the forum can help you out. That or take it into bestbuy which will cost you about 150
I would gladly do it for the standard beer payment but I just don't have time with working about 80 hours a week and still trying to get home renos done
