| So, the Oilers have 40 wins, 28 losses and 13 Overtime points. Does that mean they played in Overtime 13 times, or just that they LOST 13 times in Overtime? |
|
|
| redlin3 |
| i think thats how many times they've lost...cause...u can go into overtime...then into Shootout...but if u win the shootout...thats registered as a win?? |
|
|
| DelSoln |
| It means they got 13 "loser" points. They were tied after 3 periods and lost 13 times in both overtime (4 times) and shoot outs (9 times). |

this is true. i just thought about it, if you were a vancouver fan, how pissed would you be that a team thats essentially below .500 beat you into the playoffs, if that happened to the oilers i would be PISSED. but it didnt so GO OIL:thumbup: |

Well, then, all I gotta say is: BOY, do the Oilers ever SUCK in overtime!!! How do you lose 13 times in one season in overtime?
Let's just hope they can get it done in regulation time in the playoffs, cause otherwise flip 'em over, they're done........ |

They had 6 wins in 10 OT games so it's not that bad. |

No, they had 6 wins in 19 games that went to OT.
What is it about the new NHL that nearly 1/4 of the Oilers' games went to OT?
I think that the penalties are way out of hand though. The amount of power play goals, and just goals in general is insane. Compared to 2004 the amount of goals this season jumped nearly 20%. From 3221 to 3831 (+610) in the east and 3097 to 3696 (+599) in the west.
Ottawa fell off a bit towards the end, but for the majority of the season they were holding at over 4 goals per game on average. It looks as though they'll finish in the 3.8 or so average.
Only St. Louis scored less than 200 goals in the whole NHL at 195. In past years 200 goals was the standard for an average team.
Now I realize that this is the new NHL and they want a lot of scoring, but it's getting a little ridiculous. At this rate we'll be surpassing the goal happy 80s within a few years.
I don't really know though, do all of you see this as a good thing or what? |

I definately think this is a good thing... penalties will drop as guys finally learn whats going to put them in the box, this is just the first season since the changes. Playoffs will be another story though, I just hope the officials keep calling it like regular season and the players will back off with the obstruction. That should keep the pace up and it'll be exciting.
I expect ratings for hockey to climb in the US too, the new Rocket Richard movie is coming out at the perfect time. It'll go like this: Yankee sees movie, Yank decides to check out a playoff game, Yank realizes Basketball, Baseball, Football and Nascar are inferior and buys season tickets in their home rink next year :D |

I think most of the kids here had not even born yet........
The oilers of that time scored +400 goals each year for 5-6 seasons (shorter seasons).......... I believe the highest number of goals was 446.........5-6 goals a game.
INSANE.
And yes it was FUN watching them blow out teams by 5-8 goal margins. High scoring is a good thing.
but I don't think any team will hit 446 ever again...
:D |

That's only because the defense of today is so much more intense than back then. Put some of these scorers back in the 80s and we would have had 500+ goal seasons. Goaltending and defense in general in the 80s was a joke. Yes there were a few decent goalies, but they had so many shots there was no way they could keep up.
Personally I see the 80s as a bad time for hockey. It was all about the glory on the offense and nobody backchecking or helping out in the defensive zone. |

They went to OT 26 times not 19 and as mentioned above of those 26 times they managed to get a win 13 times. |

| Ooops, I guess I missed their shootout wins. Regardless, that's even more games into OT, almost 1/3. |

You are kidding right?
Were you even old enough to watch hockey in the 80's? Through the late 70's and early 80's eras of Hab's & Islander dynasties those teams were all about team defense. Those guys were the epitome of two way hockey. The 80's were pretty wide open offensively, but even the high flying Oilers learned to play defense in the playoffs. You could always tell when the Oil were getting serious because Gretz would come back into his own zone to back check.
The last decade of hockey is what really sucked, with the success of the "trap" in NJ & Minnesota. "Playing it safe" with one guy forechecking while plugging the neutral zone with the other 4 guys. Goals dried up because even gifted players couldn't produce offense while towing some slug around the ice. There was a reason that the NHL stepped up the obstruction enforcement this season, and that was because most people want to see the good players allowed to make good plays.
You should hand in your Edmonton citizenship for daring to criticize that era - and be forced to wear Craig Simpson's haircut for a year...:p |

Not to mention the fact that the goalie equipment has been shrunk by a 1/3 this year. Shooters can actually see some twine on a breakaway, for a change...... |

Hehehe..... you beat me to it.........completely agree.
Rexx and youngbex are also correct in the analysis....
The size of goaltending equipment and trap definitely led to the worst hockey EVER.
The game is definitely turning around for the best.
First time in a LONNNNNNNNNG time that hockey has become entertaining. |

leafs didnt deserve to make the playoffs, because they blow. but it would have been nice to see them get in and then get swept by ottawa, then leaf fans wouldnt have that "ottawa has never beaten us in the playoffs" excuse.
i have a feeling roloson will play solid in the playoffs **knock on wood****
GO OILERS! |

Oh I completely agree that the last decade or so has sucked balls. Eliminating the red line has essentially eliminated the trap and made for a much more exciting game of hockey, but I still think that the 80s were a lacking time for defense in hockey.
In 79-80 the average goals against was in the 300 range. Last season it was nearly 100 goals lower. Throughout the 80s it only rose higher and higher until teams began playing the trap and goaltenders began wearing circus tents for jerseys in the 90s.
I suppose there needs to be a balance though. We should be able to get a much better idea how the new NHL looks as we go into the 06-07 season. For now, I'm going to sit back and cheer for an all-Canadian Stanley Cup. It's about time the cup came home, even if it is to Calgary or Ottawa. |
