Oliver area - Click HERE for Original Thread

Hey, quick question -- does anybody live in the Oliver area (or have lived there)?

Just wondering if it's a relatively safe part of town. It looks nice and all but I've heard some bad stories about the area (including the wonderful school predator one). I was just checking out the condo market and there are a LOT in that area...wondering if they are worth checking out??

tokes
Some friends of mine live right off Oliver Square, by that cemetary. Being so close to downtown and Gmac housing can bring some rowdyness on occasion, but I don't think it's too bad.

it's actually pretty decent. all the bums stay closer to jasper ave as that's where most of them pan handle. There's not much trouble at all.

being so close to jasper and 104 ave, there are plenty of cops always cruising around.

I lived on Jasper and 111st and I never felt threatened. living 3 blocks north (i.e. a bit more remote) and you're gold. you do, however, get more petty crimes (people busting your car windows to loot it, etc.), but for the most part really nice.

edit: I'm talking about the oliver square area. not too sure if there's another oliver area.

When I was condo shopping, I was in the Oliver area. The day I was there, I witnessed a crook being chased on foot by cops and I saw two indians fighting outside a liquor store.

Some nice, new condos there for cheap, but it wasn't the place for me...especially being from Calgary where this sorta shit doesn't really happen.

loooooooooool! good leap.

lengthy one, but good try nonetheless.

bums always fight. you've just had the good fortune to actually witness one. I've never seen one myself so according to me, bums never fight in edmonton.

like I said... petty crimes happen a lot downtown. if you're cool with that, you'll be fine (granted i lived far up so I really had nothing to worry about).

DoubleDown
Oliver is jam packed with homosexuals, haha (they even have an annual gay pride thing in Oliver Park, I think). Besides that, it's very scenic, close to everything including trails, parks, etc.

Crime statistics aren't too bad over there either... just B&E's and drug stuff, not much violent crime, if memory serves.

OK, those are fair comments. Question is would you feel comfortable with your sister living there or your gf? Just wondering if that would change your opinion of safe?

And GTS Jeff, what a load of crap? Have you never been in Calgary's river valley near the drop in center? I think I'd rather see bums fight than be caught in the crossfire between asian gangs. (although we have that problem too I guess)

Oh and another thing...does living in areas that have a lot of car theft problems cause your insurance to go up (if you have theft coverage)?

It's not something I've ever thought of before cuz I didn't have theft on a car until I got the civic and there's no crime issues like that in the Park.

I've heard of insurance going up, but mine never. *might* be because I had underground parking facilities. if it's just parked on the street it might depending on your insurance company. That'd be something you'd have to ask them.

if I had either (sister or gf), hell yeah. I'd feel totally safe with them living there. my reasoning, because bigger crimes don't occur in places with higher traffic.

lived downtown for 2 years and my biggest complaint is the bums. they didn't do anything per se, but I just hate being bugged for change.

rythex
I live on 118th and jasper, there aren't TOO many bums around..
It's pretty mixed from high income/mid/low income.. since you have such a huge variance in property values here (walk up condos, high rise condos etc)

And plus I'm paying $1390 / year for my 2003 300 hp coupe for insurance, so I don't think that has a huge factor in your insurance rates living here.

I think it's relatively quiet around here, how many times do you here about killings in Olver verus Millwoods/south end of the city?

halfer
I've shown some condos in that area, but I would not personally want to live in their as alot of cars get broken in to or just vandalized. Alot of people have problems with crooks sneaking into the underground garages and having them break into numerous cars.

Some complexes are video survalianced but in all reality some people just dont care.

You asked for opinions and I gave mine, what's the problem? :dunno:

And yes, Edmonton is far more crime-ridden than Calgary. I grew up in the NE ghetto of Calgary and have never witnessed bumfights or anything like that. In the few years I've lived in Edmonton, I've seen bumfights, copchases, blood covered bums, I've been through two (attempted) muggings on the bus before too. Anecdotal evidence you say?

SilverNeonRacer
My sis used to live on 102ave and 122st, no probs there.. I used to live on 105st and 107 ave, then on 107ave and 103st.

When I was on 105th, came home from work one day to find a couple cops using a pickup next to my wife's car to lean their rifles on as they scoped an appartment accross the alley, and once placce accrosss the alley got molitoft'd(sp?) One car break in, other than the window they got nothin.. cause I yelled at the guy from 3rd story.

Other than that no issues

You're right. My apologies. I just think perhaps you've not been in the right spots in Calgary. I've been around 17th ave area a lot lately and I have not been impressed with some of the stuff I've seen....but that is just my opinion.

Anyway, thanks everyone for the opinions! Helps a lot! You guys rock...as always. :)

midnite
My roommates gf and a female coworker both live about a block away from oliver school. It seems like a safe area whenever I visit. I haven't heard any complaints from either.

You must be referring to 17th Ave SE...which is an area that Calgarians avoid (unless they live there, in which case, they're probably displaced newfies and Edmonchucks.) ;)

IN shrewood Park, on easter weekend a few years ago, I was at my grandmas place with my OLD explorer

Anyway.. got the windows busted in. THey stole my icebreaker mints, and about $2 in american change.

But smashed the windows in

My moms Expedition was broken into at Galaxy in sherwood Park. They didnt steal anything. Just smashed the windows in

THat kid got beat to death at the house party about 6 months ago

So there is some petty crime in sherwood park too

the_fornicator
petty theft is everywhere. when you have a larger concentration of people like in the downtown core, emperically, there's simply more opportunity for things to happen based sherely on numbers.

if you take the proper precautions, it's pretty easy to not be a victim. lived on jasper ave for two years and never had problem. park in more public places and/or in view of cameras and stuff, put all your stuff in your trunk, don't blare your stereo coming in or out of your parkade, etc.

but that isn't exclusive to downtown though. this applies to everywhere, but again, more people = more opportunity.

I've actually heard of more cars being stolen from riverbend than downtown. just more get vandalized downtown.
