I think my amp is fried - Click HERE for Original Thread

SilverNeonRacer
OK, I was taking some tools out of my trunk so I could swap my wife's summer tires on, and I bumped the ground wire for my amp.

Stereo's on I'm listening to it while I do the tires.

I put the tools back and decide to reseat the ground wire, well I loosened the screw and it popped out, but the subs where still going.. pretty good too. Now I do know the deck amp remoe is a neg signal.. I thnk my amp is using my remote wire for a gound... would could explain why when I crank the stereo My mids and tweets suck.

There's no way I have wires backwards.... my pos and Neg ar 1/0 sockets where I show the wire in and crank down a bolt almost, and the remote is like a speaker connection.

I really don't think my pos and neg are reversed.... that would cause the amp to go boom.

I have a MTX 81000D(Supposidly will hit 1600WRMS @ 14.4V and 2ohm).

No warranty left and Ideas?

your mids and tweets suck ? amp them the bass is overpowering your speakers so they dont seem as loud. Or you can turn down the bass because that amp will push any sub pretty well. Your amp is using the remote wire as ground... thats not good scratch some paint off some where on the body of the car and use a self tap screw to secure it.

SilverNeonRacer
Ok, I should be more clear.

The compared to before, last vehicle I installed this deck/amp/subs in, if I turn the volume up to 27, just before the mids and tweets start to distort(was 32 in my other car) then turn up the remote bass thing, the mids and tweets get a little quieter, but start to distort noticably.

I have 1/0 ground wire, I drillled a hole, ground off the paint with an angle grinder, I'm using a name brand grommet thing, I took the end of my wire that was to be shoved in the amp, and did a contitunity(sp) test with a factory ground point in the trunk with a multimeter, and it was good.

The remove is supposed to be isolated from the main ground for just this reason....

I don't know about your problem off hand, but be careful when removing live wires like that if you don't want to create a few arcs and scare the shit outta yourself. I've done it and hit my head on trunklids, hatches, and hoods. :D

SilverNeonRacer
Mine arc even when the amp is off... so installing it I always get one arc. when I put the ground back in - no arc.. the ground does work, cause I've used it for a little 12V air pump.

Um, first thing first, the remote signal off a deck is not a neg signal, its positive and this is easily verified, use a multimeter and check the remote line when the deck is on and it will show 12 volts. The other way to verify this is to simply jump the wire from the remote to the 12V+ and that amp will turn on provided its functioning properly. Where is the amp mounted? Is the chasis mounted to metal. If the heat sink of the amp is mounted to metal the amp can actually ground through the chasis of the amp, it wont be a good ground, but a ground none the less. You didnt specify whether the speakers were stock or aftermarket, if they are stock then I believe we just found the reason why your mids and highs suck. Post back on that stuff and I can probally help you from there.

SilverNeonRacer
The Amp is mounted to MDF, the only ground, would be the ground...

Yes the speaker are stock. The problem is keeping the volume the same say 27 on the dial, the speakers sound fine, if I turn up the subs via my EBC, then the speakers start to distort.

I still have to check all the voltages and the pos neg thing.

Ravendarat
Ah I understand now. Are the front and rear speakers distorting? It is possible, however rare that when turning the EBC up you are boosting a frequency range that is causing the speakers in the vehicle to resonate, causing distortion. It would be rare for this to happen, and the only way to help it is to replace the speakers or if possible, change the frequency that the EBC is boosting, but that is probally not possible.

SilverNeonRacer
The EBC only controls the sub amplifier, it plugs directly into the amp.

The subs still play those freqs at lower volume with the EBC turned down.

Yes it's the front 3.5" and the rear 6x9's that distort.

Ravendarat
I understand that, but the EBC does not actually boast the entire spectrum of frequency's. It only boosts a certain frequency and the Q surrounding it, which will vary depending on the slope of the crossover. So if the speaker resonats at about 50 hz and the EBC boosts the 45 hz range with a 6db slope then you are gonna be boosting that 50 hz tone and the increase in the tone could cause the speaker to resonate.

SilverNeonRacer
True very true, I actually think the EBC does boost it at a sliding range of ffreqs..

The other thing is.. the sub are mounted and fire pretty much directly into the back of my 6x9s.. but the front speakers distort too.

Ravendarat
It doesnt matter that the subs are mounted in the trunk becuase the wave still travels throughout the entire vehicle. This is probally a moot point anyways being its very unlikely that a 6x9 will have the same resonate frequency of a3 1/2 but with out hearing it I cant say what else its gonna be.
