so my stock rsx deck is a piece of shit.
what should i buy to as least get a decent amount of bass? doesn't have to be as strong as using subs.

how about a new deck and speakers? or would just speakers be fine? or would just deck be fine?

im a noob haha.

Altezza
you want bass? get a single sub
you want better sound replace your speakers
just replace the factory deck because their all shitty compared to a decent aftermarket deck

chckn
so if replacing speakers gives better sound, then what does replacing deck with aftermarket deck do?

It gives you a deck that didnt come with the car, and has crazy awesome LED's and shit and goes Vroooom Pssshhhhhhhh! :D

jk, changing the deck wont give you extra bass or anything, itll just give you a new deck. You need subs if you want crazy bass.

ehh i guess subs will be the way i'll go then. but with the stock deck, theres no sub controls.
whereas the aftermarket one does.
do sub boxes have some kinda control thing to adjust the loudness of the subs? or how would that work?

i already have a deck but i dunno if i wanna install it

Orzel_pl
Even your stock one should have some kind of bass and trebble controls. But ya the aftermarket one, you can wire your subs to it with cables and control their levels and the amp through the deck. Just gotta make sure the aftermarket one states that it has the options for those controls.

chckn
i'm gonna be getting someone to install the subs for me (future shop probably).

is there anything else i need to buy besides the subs and box?

Orzel_pl
Amplifier, but that depends how sharp you want everything to sound.

chckn
so amp is a must right?

i also heard something about some expensive wires i need to buy.

Orzel_pl
Amp wouldnt be a bad idea, Im waiting for some of the audio gurus on this site to chime in here cause im rather novice at it.

As for those expensive wires, they are probobly talking about the MONSTER cables and stuff running from the amp back to the deck, and from the Car battery to the Amp and such. They dont have to be overly expensive, but the quality ones do run from 40bucks to $XXX.00

chckn
would the subs work without the amp?

Altezza
the subs need to be powerd some how so you will need a amp. I would suggest a rockford P2002 and pretty much any sub.

chckn
know any places in town that would do a nice clean job installing the subs so it doesnt look like junk in the hatch?

Kyle2K
my friend got his whole system installed into his cobalt by certified radio yesterday, it looks pretty tight. although he had awsome equipment to start with, it should look good :p

any idea how much it cost him for install?

PiKaMonK
Well first dude, lay out what you want to spend.

It's recommended to get an aftermarket deck because of the sound controls and outputs will be much better than a stock deck. (unless you get a p.o.s. of course)

But it doesn't seem like you are too worried about it, so what you will need for your sub is:

A line output converter
2 channel or mono block amp
subwoofer and enclosure
About 5ft of speaker wire (positive and negative)
15ft lead (just single wire)
about 15ft of RCA cables (if you are going to put it in your trunk as well)
About 15ft of 8AWG (depending on how much power) wire for your power cable
and 5ft of 8AWG wire for your ground
And ring terminals for all your wires.

IMO wire brand really doesn't matter if you aren't going to have a competition system. Im' not saying you shoudl cheap out, spend as much as you can, but $30 for RCA's should get you a nice thick set with good insulation. If you are going to buy your gear online I suggest knukonceptz.com or edesignaudio.com for your wiring and whatnot, and even eD for your car audio wouldn't be a bad choice.

Anyway, need a budget first then go from there.

well he had all of his own equipment from before, so they only charged him about $200... also, they wouldnt let him use his rockford rca's but his rockford sub, amp, power wire, speaker wire and deck were fine. the reason was that if it was pinched they didnt wanna re-run the wire for their warrenty

If you want to simply add some bass, you can go one of three routes, depending how much you want to spend.

1. Get an Amplifier that has Speaker level inputs, a sub and box and call it good. This would be your cheapest option, but also sound the poorest (assuming the stock system is a typical stock system). It would basically allow you to maintain your stock deck, run a splice from the stock speaker wires to the amp, and then hook up a sub to the amp. If you were going to do this I'd recommend a lower power amp and a 10" sub (single voice coil or dual, doesn't really matter). If your bass is too loud it will drown out your mids and highs and you won't be able to hear anything except Thump thump thump. This will give you the most low quality bass for the $$

2. Replace factory deck with aftermarket, get a 4 channel amp and replace the stock speakers with quality components. With the right setup, you can get some really good sound and some good sounding bass (though not the thump thump thump of a sub) with some quality components to a simple system. This is going to be your best option if you want good sound with some nice bass, if you are on a budget. Personally, if you are doing this, I'd recommend Alpine Type S speakers. They are middle of the road, good sounding speakers when you get them amplified correctly

3. Take the above option, add a mono block or 2 channel amp, and a sub and box. This will give you the loud, wake up your neighbors at 2 am kind of sound that most 16 year olds jizz after. If you get the right subs, amps and box set up, it will also be the cleanest sounding THUMP THUMP THUMP you can get. Options for subs range in the 10" to 15", 1 or 2 of them, single voice coil vs dual. Lots of options, but the bigger the setup, the more $$$ your going to spend.

Decide which of these options you want to go with, and then PM me, I can come up with some alternatives if you want.

Vindicate
Dont think anyone said this yet, but if you're getting an aftermarket deck try and get one with at least one set of RCA preouts. The higher the voltage of the preout the cleaner the signal also, though its not a HUGE difference its still there.

Ravendarat
Okee Dokee, my turn. First off a deck can make a SIGNIFIGANT difference in the sound of a stereo in a vehicle. Factory decks generally run about 8 watts rms per channel at a THD of 16%+, where as a typical aftermarket deck will run in the 18-22watts RMS range with a THD under 10%.What that equals is a power gain of over 100% with a distortion level dropped by about 35%, hence better sounding stereo. So swap the deck out. Next for the sub and amp. Since you are a newb, (and dont take offence to this because there is none intended) im gonna try to keep this simple. If you run one sub then you are gonna want a 2 channel amp, and if you run 2 subs you are gonna want a mono block. Reason why is that a TYPICAL 2 channel amp is optimized for sub operation with a 4 ohm bridged load, which is what a single voice coil sub will give you, a mono block is optimized for 2 ohm mono operation which is what 2 single voice coil subs will give you. now obviously this changes when you start dealing with dual voice coil subs or subs who dont have the standard single 4 ohm voice coils. I hope this isnt confusing. What I tell most customers who are working on a budget is to swap out the deck and add the sub and the amp first. This is a good first step and some people are happy with the sound they get just by taking this first step. If you are still not happy then its time to upgrade the speakers and depending on how head strong you wanna go is gonna decide what kinda speakers you are gonna want and if you are gonna need/want an amp to run them etc etc. As for where to go, Im not gonna shamlessly plug my shop on here, all Im gonna say is that go where you are comfortable, if you wanna go certified then go there, if you wanna go to FS then go there. In the end its the installer that makes or breaks the deal not the shop. I know that I dont have people complaining about my work and if you wanna get ahold of me PM me, I just dont wanna do the plug on the site as thats not what this thread is about. if you hae any more ? post em up.

chckn
what do you guys think about this one?

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/pr...ts_id/1010.html

or any other sub/amp deals on that site?

Ravendarat
whats that come out to in Canadian after shipping? Its a decent set up provided its not gonna come out to be to much but I have a feeling that after the shipping and exchange its gonna be a bit of a rip.

chckn
In Canadian dollars, it comes out to approx $260-280 after shipping.

jarago

Ravendarat
It looks crooked

BErettin
tthe install makes the product. it may be a piece of shit amp. but the kid was willing to pay to make it look good hahahaha

Altezza
In the line of consumer electronics everyone is too their own. Some people like Clarion some like Kicker. That kid probably likes Clarion so to him its not "shit" its "The Shit" Nothing is shitty its just lower quality compared to diffrent product that you know and tested. My 2 cents :)
