sub control question - Click HERE for Original Thread

tegGSR
i have sub control on my deck and i was just wondering how i get this to work instead of having to adjust my amp directly. as of right now i can turn the "sub" setting on my amp from the lowest to the highest with no response so i was just wondering how to hook up this feature

thanks in advance:thumbup:

on any deck i've seen you just go to the sub setting, and turn it up... nothing to do with the amp's settings

are you sure your remote wire and rca's are installed correctly? because when you turn up the bass from the deck, it just increases the signal to give you better bass

ya when i turn the bass up on my deck it turns the subs up, but there is also a seperate "sub control" and i was just wondering how you hook this up to work

my old pioneer deck has seperate subwoofer outputs on the back, but the subs can also be hooked up to the REAR and there's a setting in the deck that I tell it which ports my subs are connected to. if i use the rear speaker port, then i dont' get all the options, but when I set it to the dedicated sub output, I can get full control over the crossover, gain, and bass-boost.
the only issue with this is that if I use my crossover control on the amp, and the crossover on the deck at the same time, i get really bad response, and distortion. so I turned off the crossover on the amp and just use the deck settings so now the delay is gone, and the distortion is also gone. if your deck has a dedicated subwoofer output, and it's hooked up properly, you might as well set the amp to "flat", and eliminate all that extra noise-introducing processing .

what model of deck do you have? i might be able to lookup what options it has for crossover and gain controls for the subwoofer channel.

my rockford amp also has a seperate sub control knob... i attached it under my dash. the cable looks alot like a phone line that is attached to the knob and to the amp. maybe your missing some parts?

mine looks like this, is it similar to yours?

sorry i was very unclear, my deck has an electronical setting on it such as BASS, TREBLE, FADE and then one of them is SUB CONTROL but when i adjust it nothing happens so i was wondering how this works?

thanks for all the help so far though:cool: (no sarcasm)

I think your setup isn't hooked up correctly, but you can't really diagnose these things well over the internet.

In the future though, go post on caraudioforums.com if you need advice on car audio. The shit "advice" I've read in this thread is making me pee blood..

Depending on the model of your HU, you will most likely have 3 sets of RCA outputs from your deck. One set of these will be "fronts" and another rears. These are designed to run to an amplifier that is either set up for HPF (High pass Filter) or Full range (no filter on any of them). The third output will be set up to run to an amp that is set up for LPF (Low Pass Frequency). This is the amp that should power your subs.

So in order for the "sub control" feature of your HU to do anything, you will need to have an RCA cable connecting the "sub" output to an Amp that is wired correctly to your subs. The HU will send the signal and volume level to the amp for the low frequency only (your HU SPEC sheet would be able to tell you exactly what frequency is sent through to the amp).

Before you can go about setting the "gain" on your amplifier, to be controlled by the Deck, you should ensure that your HU, AMP and Subs are all wired correctly. If you don't know about correct ohms, wiring setups, etc, there is a ton of information available on the net... google is your friend.

Some decks have the sub pair of RCA's labeled as non fading(Kenwoods for example)

On some desks turning up the sub control adds distortion. Distortion =bad.

I only really use my sub control(non fading) to turn "down" the subs when my EBC(external bass control) doesn't do it enough, and I don't want to go tot the trunk to turn down the gain.

The trick to avoiding distortion is to set the gain on the amplifier correctly the first time.

Umm thats not what I ment... some deck add distortion to give a louder bass effect when you turn up the bass control within the deck.

I know back in late 90's Sony was bad for this.

My Gain is cranked :P then I just use my EBC to keep it low, simple twist of the dial and BOOM(well normally).

Yeah, the trick is avoid any and all "DSP" type bass booster functions.

Anyway, you may want to retune your setup. What you have right now is very convenient yes, but when you turn up the amp gain like that, you do several bad things:

a. you're working the amp harder than it needs to work to produce the same sound
b. you're amplifying extraneous noise that takes away from overall sound quality
c. you're inducing distortion at the level of the amp because it's working so damned hard.

There are several correct ways of setting gain, but the quickest and easiest is to do it this way: turn off all the bass-boost-garbage, turn your head unit's sub control to about 3/4 or max) and turn the amp gain down all the way, and turn up the head unit volume until you hear distortion from any speakers, then back it off a bit, then slowly start turning up the amp gain until you hear distortion, then back it off a bit again. Now your amp gain is set properly and you can back off the head unit sub control to bearable levels. By doing this, you'll get much cleaner and better sounding bass.

I use my deck "non fading"(sub) control once every couple months.. maybe... it sits at the default 1/2 mark.

Sometimes I like to crank my subs full and for that I need the gain turned up. It's an adaptive class D amplifier, the EBC(which is an oem option for my amp) is what I use to adjust the bass from the drivers seat.

I'll admit, I probably could turn the gain down a bit now due to how my listening styles have changed.

your RCA's are pluged in to the wrong output. t hey have to be on the 'sub out' output inorder for you to control it;)

haha that sub control is for noobs
