i recently purchased a 91 toyota mr2 turbo...
car is in great shape only needing a paint job as well as a thrust bearing...
after doing some research i've found that repairing a thrust bearing must be one of the worst things to repair and decided not to take on it myself...
once i knew the thrust bearing went i knew to not even start the car as that would make it worse, so all that is wrong is the thrust bearing...
the person that i bought it from told me that the engine in the car was still on warranty and can stil get me a replacement engine at cost, which is still quite pricey...
so basically, what i am asking is, is there anyone able to repair this thrust bearing for me? or...
is it cheaper for me just to get a replacement engine at cost?
the only downfall to getting the replacement engine is that i have no one to install it for me
PLEASE help me with some feedback. |

A 91 MR2 and its still under warranty? I highly doubt that. But anyways, do you realize what a thrust bearing is? And what it does?
Its part of your clutch assembly and not your motor or tranny. All you need to do is replace your clutch (which includes a new Thrust bearing) and you will be as good as new. It is possible that your thrust bearing is gone and yet your clutch is still in pretty good shape. But considering the work involved in replacing this bearing, it would be very wise to replace the whole clutch (especially given the age of your car)
So all you need to do is buy a clutch kit for your 91 MR2 Turbo and get it installed., Doing a clutch on one of those cars is a bitch, but its better than doing a whole motor swap! ;)
Hope this helps.

um, no a thrust bearing is part of your mortor, one of the main bearings. it controls your crankshaft end play. your thinking about a throw out bearing.
and it could have a remanifactured engine it, just replaced and still has waranty |

:smack: Sorry about that..I didnt read the post correctly :( I was referring to a Throw out Bearing and not a Thrust Bearing.
If your Thrust bearing is gone, then you will need to rebuild the bottom end (I would anyways, especially pulling out the crank to get at these bearings. Might as well change the rod and main bearings too. That way, you will have a fresh bottom end. Also check the crank...it might need a micro-polished (hopefully nothing more, because then you would need to get into over sized bearings for proper fitment)
Sorry If I caused any confusion with my previous post :p |

| If you have the money rebuild the engine with aftermarket components if not... then just purchase a JDM engine for like 2 grand, its not hard to swap in, I did it myself. |
