Welding equipment - Click HERE for Original Thread

I know a few spots to buy equipment, but I'm wondering if anybody knows places where I could rent a mig/helmet/welding glove/etc/etc.

I have a trailer I want to fix as replacing it would be ouch, or I might build a new one...

Anyhow.. any ideas?

I should add It's bee a while, but after a little catch up practice I know how to weld good enough for what I want to do.

Thanls

jberger
not to scare you but you are legaly responceable if that trailer breaks and wrecks/hurts anyone going down the road,
just so you know, but go to princess auto, pick up a 7 dollar mask, glovesand all the other crap that you will need , and talk to hertz about renting a machine

I know about the legality part. I'll probably have pl/pd ont he trailer incase of breakaway and such.

Also the Gov will have to inspect my trailer before they give it a vin. It's been onthe road as is, shoot I've hauled it loaded off roading... actually when I ripped it apart to see if it had anymajor issues before IU had it inspected I was kinda shocked to see what I saw.

I also over engineer, so the hope is it'll hold alot more than what I need it too. Never thought of Hertz, and I was thinking a auto darkening mask, princess has them for like $100, but goggles should be fine too.

Thanks

sparkycivic
i got one of those PA auto darkening masks... it's pretty good, but i get flashed once every so often beause my arm is blocking the sensor or whatever. i just learned to squint before striking, still much better than flipping it down and forgetting where torch is. i make a lot less false starts with it.

while you're there pick up a box o rods, because i am not sure that the rental place will have them for any decent price.

SilverNeonRacer
I thought Mig was wire fed, so no rods...

Or would standard arc be better? I'm welding mainly steel, but I would like to use aluminum as well, steel for the frame stuff, then alum for the deck and wall cage.

On the same lines, where would be a good place to get steel at a good price, I'm thinking 2" square, definatly hollow tube. Same for alum.

The reason why I want to mix alum in is cause I'm trying to keep this tailer as light as possible.

jberger
stick is alot better, more pentration and is more ductile then mig, use 7018 to weld mild steel with stick , aluminum mig is going to be the easyest , if you need steel phone super metal market, they are in the south and west end of town and yes mig is wire fed

Now ya lost me....

I've Arc welded and I've oxy-acetaline(sp) welded before, i haven't mig'd.

If a mig is wire fed, how would I use sticks? or should I just arc weld it?

jberger
stick is smaw or arc welding , the one your switch rods , mig is the one with the wire on a spool , you should use stick it is just better (arc welded it)

Ahh and an Arc welder is much cheeper than mig.

I was looking at some ads in Edmonton ysterday, they where saying use an actual mig for alum?

You gave the rod # for steel, what would be good for alum, and what would be good for alum to steel? or should I just bolt alum to steel?

Like I said it's been a while, and I was by no means a professional. I mean my welds where solid, and structurally good, maybe not the prettiest....

but on a personal utility trailer that any thing I do is an upgrade, pretty don't matter.

sparkycivic
oops, i didn't read the part where you said you were going to use a MIG.
get a roll of steel wire and a roll of aluminum wire, but as far as I hear, aluminum welding isn't going to be much fun at all with any welder. that's almost better off left to go with bolts and steel brackets to install the aluminum. Besides, you're not going to get away with welding aluminum to anything made of steel anyhow. that would just fall apart because they are different metals.

have fun with the project

SilverNeonRacer
Hmmm

Well if welding aluminum to alum sucks I'll probably stick to steal, and arc it then.

I could weld alum to alum, and steal to steal, and then bolt th alum to the steal.

I've never welded aluminum before...
