Battery gets continually drained, audio system problem? - Click HERE for Original Thread

penance
So i replaced my car battery 4 days ago.... it was an old Canadian Tire one, that was leaking to boot. Yesterday and today my battery was drained to the point that i couldn't even get enough juice to unlock the car doors.

I had also stopped using my stereo system a week ago due to an annoying amount of background distortion coming from the deck. (It used to go away when you hit the side of the dashboard... found that out after venting some frustration!). However, that doesn't work anymore... it became constant so i stopped turning it on.

I plan on having the battery checked out tomorrow afternoon. But figured i would ask anyone with knowledge in audio systems... if something like my cd player (which is mid 90's) could be the reason my battery is losing all power.

Any thoughts? :dunno:

Maybe its your alternator?

A long time ago when the 2g's first came out, my friends brother had a 95 and when the battery was dying the stereo reacted in the same way. He lucked out and just got a new battery, but if that doesnt work then as crazyrx7 said most likely the alternator. Either way, if your battery is 4 years old, and the alternator is even older, it'll probably be the next thing to go.

penance
Yeah it could be my alternator... it doesn't even make a clicking noise so it could be my starter.

I just took a wire off the neg terminal that wasn't attached to anything... so now i'm curious as to whether they broke a connection to something when they installed my new battery :(

grrr.. next spring i'm shipping her back to alberta & selling

Next time you go out to your car I would check and see if the car battery is maintaining 12 volts. If it is then you know the altenator is working right and you know the battery is likely good. Then it would look to be the starter. If you dont have 12 volts at the battery then you have a couple of issues to look at. Fault Battery, but thats unlikely since you just replaced it and this problem was basicly preexisting. Second would be the altenator. This is possible however if the vehicle runs fine once its started then this is unlikley. The Third option and most likely is a ground issue. It is the most likely. First a improper ground would cause the battery to not charge properly. Second a faulty ground at the battery could cause an audio issue. And third is you said that there was a broken wire at the battery anyways so thats where I would start my trouble shooting.

I have no idea what that wire USED to be attached to :dunno: can't find anything that is missing a connection.

It wasn't my alternator or my starter... they're both working really well.

The problem was my battery. It was defective. It started out at 14volts when it was installed.. then slowly over 4 days of driving it diminished itself down to the point where the minute you turned the car off day 5-7 the battery was sitting at 8volts (7volts actually since the car alarm & stereo alarm were still running off of it).

So after an hour and 3 battery replacements... i finally recieved one that wasn't defective

As for the distorted audio.... i guess i'll find out after a couple drives whether that was fixed by my battery replacement or if it actually is the headunit.

Hopefully. I had the same symptoms in my Eclipse, and even after a battery replacement I was still getting an 8volt reading. Swapped the alternator and everything has been fine since(2 years ago).
