What's the difference between 1 way, 1.5 way, and 2 way LSD? - Click HERE for Original Thread

REFLUX
Alright, don't think this topic has been covered before ;)

What's the diff between these 3 styles of LSD?
All I'm familiar with is that 2way is supposedly the most aggressive and is often prefered for drifting.

Maybe that it delivers power to both wheels the quickest?

And again, Non Tech related posts will be deleted.

This is a very simple and easy to understand explination of lsd differences.

Some manufacturers make LSD's in different configurations and are commonly classified as 1 way, 1.5 way and 2 way. This designation reflects the design of the cam groove which enables the LSD to function differently under different loads.

A 1 way differential means that the cam is shaped in such way as to have positive lock only when accelerating.

The 2 way is constructed in a way to have positive lock motion in both acceleration and deceleration mode (Figure 3).

The 1.5 way functions almost same as a 2 way but provides less lock when decelerating. The 1.5 way can provide more forgiving balance when braking than a full 2 way setup, although it is less effective for true racing applications, it provides easier operation for beginners in throttle off conditions. 1.5 way is also very effective for front wheel drive cars which need extra stability during braking.

whats best for track?

would you be better off with 1.5 or 2?

driftr420
1.5 for racing when needing grip, and if you like a hard locking slippy feel you go 2 way

DomesticDrifter
it depends on your driving style/skill.

if you're a newb to the track i'd go 1.5 way as it offers more stability under hard breaking and wont lock up your back tires.

sounds good

1.5 imo.

Edit: Now thats a good topic Terry:thumbup:

A limited slip will make the car more difficult to turn if the wheels are gripping. This leads to increased stability when the lsd is engaged. A limited slip under braking will make the car more resistant to turn in and will lead towards more understeer unless the tires break loose.

Limited slip on accleration will prevent the inside wheel from spinning and help launch you out of a corner. This will be faster until the traction is overcome and both of the drive wheels will start to slide.

My preference is to have the LSD act only under acceleration and only enough to prevent the inside rear from smoking up.

I say 1-way or possibly 1.5 way for track use. 2 way is really only useful for drifting.

I don't think any serious aftermarket LSDs come in 1 way flavour....

Thegnome
I'm really glad you posted this. Granted I didn't really look AT all to distinguish the difference between the lsds...but that really clears things up.

I now know I want a 2 way

1-way the most used??? I doubt that, most that would buy aftermarket units for racing would be using 1.5way. :dunno:

icydude
i could see most non racer type buying 1 ways for street driving.
1.5 for the weekend racer/drifter and 2 way for the drifter only crew.

GTS Jeff
Icydude, you're partially correct. Kaaz does not currently make 1 way LSDs, though they did in the past. I had the pleasure of driving an AE86 with an old 1 way Kaaz last weekend. :)

so a oem nissan vlsd is considered a 1way?
