Buying new car from US, cost? - Click HERE for Original Thread

LeadSled
I am looking at buying a new car from the US with the high Canadian dollar, does anyone know what kind of customs and tax they will hit me with?

I bought a used car a while back from the US and if I remember right, customs was dirt cheap. Just 7% tax and that was it :dunno:

I noticed the list price in Canada was $8000 higher than the US list price converted into CDN dollars, and I found one in Seattle that I could fly down and get... its an 06 SRT-8 Grand Cherokee. I am 99% sure the Grand Cherokee is on that approved imported vehicle list.

Any help appreciated :)

There's a guy who saved $14K on his Sienna - when I'm at work tonight I'll find his writeup with all his steps.

But as a summary, it's basically the same treatment as a used car I believe.

I'm picking up my brand new '06 STi in Seattle tomorrow. Gonna save about $12,000! You pay 6.1% duty if it's not made in North America, $100 A/C tax and 7% GST (6% GST if you can wait until July). RIV importation fee is just over $200.... that's it.

Just make sure the warranties are valid in Canada if you buy a new car. Subaru's is good in Canada.

Send me a PM with your email address - I found the Word document the guy who imported the Sienna wrote up. I think it covers EVERYTHING.
