Condemned: Criminal Origins - Click HERE for Original Thread

Great I thought, another game trying to cash in on the popularity of the CSI television series.

Only now they've wrapped it up in a funky FPS style game.

Wee.

Or is it?.

You play Agent Ethan Thomas in the Serial Crimes Unit tracking down serial killers until you're framed for the murder of two police officers. Now it's up to you to find the real killer as you're on the run.

Weapons are scattered throughout the levels, firearms being the most rare (with the exception of ammo being even harder to find) Conduit pipes, valve pipes, Fire axes, yes, even a metal poster sign you can bash enemies with. Each weapon has a damage, range, block, speed. When you come across a new weapon, it will compare these 4 catagories to the one currently in hand (you're only allowed one at a time) so a rebar will be faster than a conduit pipe, but does less damage, etc.

The Forensic part is kind of blah because the tool you use is already predetermined, all you do is press your default "forensic tool" button. Still, it's kind of neat to uncover clues that give you leads to your investigations.

Graphics are very well done, those of you that play F.E.A.R. will recognize alot of recycled graphics, but it is still a great engine. The Sound engineering is one of hte best I've ever heard. The sickening thuds of a pipe on a head is disturbingly realistic, as with any other form of violence. :)

It's dark like Doom 3, has the gory finishing moves of The Punisher, and you have to collect forensic evidence at crime scenes.

I should say, that this is the game that Doom 3 should've been. The environment is dark, so you get a flashlight from the get go that never runs out. But it doesn't seem out of place as Doom 3 did. There is alot more going on around in the darkness around you, so if you're paying attention, you can hear or see things that might save you a scare. I mean scare.

When you think you see a body flitting at the edges of your perception, you want to investigate, so you flank and get closer. What you don't realize is that the games AI is pretty good. If you take away their weapon, they'll either run away and circle back to attack you or frantically try to find another weapon to engage you with. If they see you first, they will ALWAYS try and outflank you, lie in wait, or hide behind a pillar to ambush you when you're least expecting it. This happens alot in the game and pretty much sets the horror element.

Listening for audiable clues lets you know if someone is stalking you, or if there may be an ambush ahead, drawing you further into the game by using both your eyes and ears to play. There are times where the zombies will pretend to be a mannequinne while you're doubling back on your footsteps and the moment you look away, you get smashed on the head with a pipe.

Although the game is short (10 levels) I'd give this game a 8.5 of 10 just for being so damned short.

Worth a play for sure.
