Question on ram/memory - Click HERE for Original Thread

baker_jeff
Can I run DDR and SDRam at the same time? I have a 1 gig stick of DDR in there right now, I originally had 384 megs of sd. Can I use both?

SilverNeonRacer
Depends on your mobo, someboards will have both slots, it's not recommended because standard SDram runs significantly slower.

Most boards I see if you but both in it'll ignore one type or give you an error.

Qoo
in my book both cannot co-exist.
even though the mobo have both slots.

the newer ECS have DDR1, and DDR2 together, you can't run them at same time evev if you put DDR1 400 and DDR2 400.

but I could be wrong, if Mr Neon have seen a SD coexist with DDR, please enlight me, and I am being sincere.

As I said most boards will give an error or ignore the SD.

I think I had a board that would run 32pin simms and 72pin simms I ran both, and it gave errors on boot.

Also way back in the day when DDR was new I think I tried this very question.. to tell ya the truth, I can't remember what it did, I think it was an Asus mobo.

I have "heard" of people getting it to work, but never have seen it for myself. And my Rule of thumb (cept for the one time I mighta tried, which could be the reason for my rule of thumb) i don't even try nor suggest it. I had a friend ask me that the other day, she had 2 full PC2700 slots and 2 free PC133 slots - I just told her no won't work. Kinda funny the way she described the pc133 slots over the phone she made them sound like rambus slots(but she has a Barton core amd :P )

Cruicial says no way will it function, but they also state a mobo is designed to run only 1 type of memory, but they leave out the mobo's that have the different slots.

Here's another one saying you can't:

RAM isn't worth the hassle of purchasing on eBay. You can pick up generic 512MB sticks for under $40 these days and if you watch the cal.forsale or edm.forsale newsgroup you can find even better deals.
