Anyone else here big into soccer? My team (Netherlands) is going all the way this year. Their first game was only a taste of the brilliance and finesse which they will unleash upon the world.
That is all.

I've never really watched soccer before. My fiance loves it though, so I've been watching. It's no hockey, but I still enjoy it. ;)
I don't know anything about the teams or players though, so it's a bit tough to get into. |

Actually, I don't think so. Holland was definitely not impressive - apart from some great work by Robben, they'll have to do a lot better than that if they plan on going deep in the tournament. Sorry to say it, but neither team brilliance nor finesse was there. 1-0 was a fitting result. Hats of to Robben, he was fantastic. Van Nistelrooy had better get his act together and fast - he was rightly substituted.
This by no means implies that Serbia played well in this match. It was a very poor effort on their behalf. It would have been great to see Serbia open with a more offensive mindset. They were way too hesitant in the beginning, and their strikers - both Kezman and Milosevic - definitely didn't do their jobs. Dutch ball possession was another key - nice crisp passes versus Serbia's long-ball tactics which sadly led nowhere. Koroman was good, but the tone was already set.
Don't worry seevik, all isn't lost - we'll take Argentina! |

the dutch played the game they needed to pla against the serbs...
going into the WC, the serbs had a perfect record for goals against...
that unreal... that also means they are not very offensive. So if you keep the ball, they will never score.
Did you see the possession % in the first half? 68% to 32%
thats unheard of!!
As for Nistelroy, it's not his fault, he was double.. if not triple covered at all times. Thats why Robben always had so much room.
Nistelroy's job is to draw defensemen out of the game... it's horrid but true...
regardless, get Van der Vaart in, play more with Van Percie, and rely less on Robben. That is how they will win...
I tell you, just watch how well the dutch posession game will work against the attacking teams of Argentina and Ivory Coast.
Those guys will be chasing the ball around wondering what's wrong :)

I agree with the ball possession statistic, you most definitely can't score if you don't have the ball. And the dutch were quite good at keeping possession, but while it did prevent Serbia from attacking more, it didn't necessarily lead to a lot of chances, and that's my main point. Without Robben's moments of brilliance, the game would have most likely ended a draw. The Serbian goalkeeper was not tested nearly enough for the amount of ball possession the dutch had. A good corollary to this was a qualifying game I was watching a few months ago between two teams who escape me right now. The disparity between possession was something on the order of 2/3 vs. 1/3, yet the other team won 3-0. The reason? Possession means nothing without quality chances, and the three good chances that the other team had were all skillfully converted. In any event, the Dutch are definitely on their way to the next round provided they play a good game against the Ivory Coast.
I am *very* interested in seeing how Serbia learns from this loss in terms of their style of play. The next game is make or break, and lets hope they're up for the task of Argentina! |

HOLLAND!!!!!!! IF YOU AIN'T DUTCH YOU AIN'T MUCH

Robben looked awesome against the serbs. I don't think the score refected the game. It could have easily been 3 - 0 if they shot the ball more. They dominate in a possession game and you'll see them break out in this tournement. And my guess is sooner rather then later.

How the heck are there so many of us Dutchies on this site?! Maybe we're all just coming out of the woodwork now that our sport is on TV.
My family got family pictures taken a little while back, we dressed up for the occasion:

| I have been watching some of the world cup for the first time. The pussies pretending to be hurt all the time are pretty lame, I guess grass is toxic to Europeans. Also what are caps? The announcer says so and so has x number of goals and x number of caps, what are they? |

I think of it as country appearances. Basically how many times has a player played outside of their home country.
I don't think Brasil will go to the World Cup final (or if they do, they won't win). Ronoldo was playing terrible (subbed off), the rest of the guys were just floating around waiting for Rhonaldhino (sp) to win the game for them.
Croatia had more/better chances, they just failed to capitalize. I think it would've been better if Brasil lost the game so they could get a 'wake up call.'
I always cheer for Argentina. And I hate da da, ENGLAND. (Fucken posers). And it's always nice to see the US get ground down in the world game. :)
If you want to appreciate the beautiful game, watch the players, and don't worry about the goals. 99% of the game is in the ball control and trying to make moves to get up the field. If you want things going in the net, watch handball or something... |

If a player participates in an international match, they call that a "cap". I found a nice explanation on this from the following website:
http://www.darrenbarefoot.com/archi...ology-caps.html
"In the “old” days (e.g., 1900), when a team would go (i.e., sail) to another country to play, the hosting team would give each member of the visiting team a brimmed hat as a symbol of goodwill. Today, caps are not exchanged, but the term “cap” continues to represent games against foreign teams, where you represent your country. There are no formal rules that say you must be playing on foreign soil when you represent your country or that you must be a member of the country’s national team in order to get “capped”." |
