Hi Engine Gurus.
I was marshalling down at Race City this past weekend and there's a new tube-frame Gen 3 (ish) RX-7 starting to compete. He was blindingly fast. Did a good job of showing up a couple of highly modified Porsche 911s for 4 laps. Blew an apex seal on lap 5. Anyway, I was talking to him and was surprised to hear he only had an N/A 12a engine in there. I was sure it would have to be a bridgeport 13b turbo to compete with the 600+ HP of the 911s. He said it was because the low weight (Tube frame, fiberglass body, etc.) and j-port of the engine that gave him a 1900 lb. car dyno'd at 280 HP. I had to agree, it SHOULD go like snot.
Anyway, I'd never heard of a j-port. I figured I could just look it up on the net when I got home but I can't seem to find anything. All I can figure is that it's an extreme race porting. He said he runs up to 10,000 RPM. What's it look like? A single monsterous j shaped port instead of the stock pair?
I couldn't find my memory card for the camera this weekend, but I'll have it for the next race weekend at Namao July 8 & 9, so I'll be posting some pics. He said he's going to try to make it up, but he wasn't sure how badly hurt the engine was. He was really scared for the housing. Of course, this being the second time ever running, nobody on his team expects to last especially long if they do. After all, it's a brand new car built from scratch. If anyone wants to see it for themselves, come out and volunteer for the Namao race. Fill out the form here. |

Which pads do you have?
The bedding procedures that I know of usually only take about 12 stops at varying speeds and breaking forces. Then it's just a matter of parking the car for a 15-20 minute cool down and your good to go.
Either way I usually just do mine north of 97st (heading out towards the highway) between the Castle Brook 7-11 and 163rd (I think) ave.
Edit: Just occured to me your on the Southside I believe so scratch that Idea. |

Thanks ehrgeiz.
I actually thought it was more exteme than a p-port. Still, 280HP out of an N/A 12a is pretty impressive.

That 3rd gen is probably Rick Couts car. Too bad he dropped an apex seal. I haven't seen the car, but I've heard about it. He's using a first gen rear axle, so the car is much less third gen than it appears, but it should be fast.

You are not going to be very popular around here with this kind of comment.... You gotta own an RX-7 to blast one in public like this.

Yeah, I'll be out. You have a shirt for me too, right Rahul?
It is Rick's car. I just needed someone to remind me whose it is. I couldn't remember him name that weekend.
The third gen part was going on body style. After all, what else would you go by on a Tube Frame car? Nothing is factory original anymore... Of course, if he's got a 12a engine and a 1st gen axle, you could ake the argument I suppose...
When it comes down to it, he's still damn fast. Now I just want to see him, Jack, Hima and Harold all on the track and working well at the same time... That would be quite the interesting race. |

I'd lay my money on Hima. Jack's Fiero is way fast, but seem to break a little too often. I'd have to say Hima's driving has improved an amazing amount over the years and his 911 is silly fast. I'm not sure speed wise how harold's 911 stacks up to Hima's but Harold's was very quick out at the Edmonton race. I could pull along with most of the cars, but Harold and Jack just left me in the dust.
