Shipping Parts From The US (Cost/Customs/Duty/Best Options) - Click HERE for Original Thread

PlungerOfDeath
Does anybody know how Customs Canada charges and "duty charges" work when shipping from the US into Canada? ie. a certain percentage of declared price?

What courier service charges the least duty?

I've talked to a few friends and they've all suggested not going with UPS because of the duty they charge. The item I'm hoping to buy is quite large (just under 40ilbs) and I'm a bit worried about the duty and customs charges being over $100 .

I'm a complete noob at this and I don't want to get screwed over. The last time I bought something online I got charged $15 in duty for a $20 item... :dunno:

I hope this is the right forum, if not would the mods please move it to the right forum?

I had struts here shipped from the US back in march. They charged me like $66 dollars +/- for freight charge at my door (something like 38 lbs or something) and got charged another 68 dollars for customs fees and whatnot on the $200 or so I spent on the declared value. Hope that helps. And that was through ups.

duty is charged on the value of the product 6.1 % wheight is different charge. I also recomend staying away from ups because they charge a whole bunch of handling fees that make it expensive, not the price or size. Also if it is a product made in the USA or Mexico you do not pay duty, I have had the best luck with USPS

I agree, use USPS if you can.....UPS rapes you on brokerage and shipping fees.

I was talking to a company in the US and they where telling me FED EX now has a service alot of canadian customers are using now. He said it has alot less fess on it as well. Im gonna have to check into this and see if its true cause I have found alot of companies wont ship USPS.

Try to ship it by USPS and if it does not work out... then...

I bought 4 rims(19s) with tires and shipped by UPS from North Carolina US.
each package, they charge brokerage fee of $60. so adds up to additional $240 on top of regular shipping charge.

Another 4 rims only(16s), shipped by Fedex from Washington DC US, Fedex charges $25 per package for brokerage fee. Adds up to $100. :(

Either way it sucks, but for heavy items, like rims, your best bet will be Fedex Ground service(if not going with USPS).

ups sucks big time, I'll never ship with them again.

Yes, UPS and Fedex will both screw you over for the "brokerage fees" and then when you complain, they'll tell you that "everybody charges that" (toro caca on that).

Here's the secret (everybody listening?)

Have the person in the US send it via US Postal Service and (here's the big secret) have them mark on the shipping waybill that it's a gift.

When they do that, it saves them a whole whack of export paperwork, and it save you all the customs and brokerage fees. You don't get charged a cent when it's a gift.

Everything I've had shipped the ppl labeled them "Vintage auto part made in the USA" One time I didn't pay anything and anotehr time I paid the gst on the declared value abd a $5 service fee.

My wife had a video card sent from a friend in the states, he upgraded, it really was a gift, and he insured it for like $600 as that was replacement value, and she got nailed like $86 from fedex

The only problem with USPS is no tracking numbers.

Get it shipped express, it does.

Um. tell them to "mark as gift" and then you dont need to ask this question.

yeah i got screwed by UPS

There was the following EXTRA charges:

Duty
Duty GST
BRokerage Fee
Brokerage GST
BROKE QST (whatever that is)
FRT. COL
PERMIT

total value for duty was 56.34

bullshit is all that was! added and extra 25% to the price of the item (which btw was still cheaper than buying it locally)

will never accept shipment from them again

i had from purolater a few days ago and NO charges at all

although i have a 75pound package coming this week.. cant wait to see what company buddy shipped with :(

Ayeso
alot of people use gift but u can also do it as a sponsorship item and it will not be charged duty as well :D

how often to the chec kthe ligitmacy of those things

ive had small items labelled as gifts

but nothing big ever..

Ayeso
Thats why sponsorship is better then gift cause if its shipped from a company it could very well be a sponsorship item, but gift from some company seems fishy.

Yeah I got screwed by UPS, so last time I used FedEx. They dude brought the package to my door, and when I signed for it I asked if there were any other charges (it was shipped prepaid) and the guy said "nope".

Then a couple weeks later they start sending me letters saying I owe them $43 or something. FUCK YOU you bag of dicks FEDEX!

Yeah, they don't bill the border rape on delivery, in the bill that comes later they say in efforts to speed up service they bill it later.

My wife got one of those bills, we forgot to pay it.. They sent us 1 reminder, we forgot again cause you actually have to mail a money order or something.... They tried going after the sender for the $$$, he was yeah right, I ain't paying that.

I got another one for my boots $8... I lost the bill... I might have to find a fed ex outlet and see if I can pay it there...

Yeah, that's cause it came Fedex. It only seems to work if it's sent through the US Postal Service and marked as a gift.
