Hey guys, it sounds like a great idea. Basically a couple issues to be addressed first.
1. What do we want our site to be about? Another message board? How-to's? Stuff like that. Basically we need to chose our main features we can build the site around.
2. Hosting. Cost depends on our traffic, starting off we can get something for as little as $10-15 a month. If we get more traffic we could probably offset that cost with some ads.
3. Domain Name - $20/year, we have to pick a name and someone with a CC will need to buy it.
4. Look and feel - Gimme any ideas on sites you've seen, and liked, maybe an idea for how our site will turn out.
cool??

| Just to tell you guys now. We own our domain, but we have our site hosted on one our members computer. That way we made it cheaper and made it more managable. |

Since he's already runnin a server I wonder if he would mind setting us up an FTP account, and hosting us. I don't imagine we'll use very much bandwidth.
If not, we would need someone who's familiar with running a webserver, and someone to purchase a domain name. I can take care of setting up the domain name.
I'm pretty busy right now too, so the design might take a while. Lets keep this thread going, ideas flowing, and I'll post when I've got a mockup or 2. |

You'll get a Pm on someones e-mail address. You'll get more information from him then me. |

apache web server is pretty much all you need, I have a DNS server I have access too so no need to set that up.
You'll also want a stable machine, something fairly fast, of course with a highspeed connection. Probably want to ne running win2k or XP, 98 is too unstable. |

| So i get apache web server and put it on my intel p-500 running a cable connection and all it costs in 20$ a year?? When you buy a domain do you tell them where to forward it to? |
|
|
| scooby_dooby |
that p500 will be fine, as long as it's a dedicated machine. if you're gonna be playing games on it, it probably wouldn't be the best for a server. It'd work, but we might have alot of down times. And are you running 2000 or XP? 98 Crashes so much, it would really not work.
Ya, when we buy a domain name we'll tell it to point to my DNS(Domain Name Server), then I'll set up an entry on my DNS and that entry will point to your IP adress. |

| I have a p500 that i dont touch its on 24/7 and its in the basement just to supply internet to all the house, its just a server, perfect eh?! Can we not have the website point to my ip adress?? do we have to have a DNS?? how mcuh does that cost or waht is it?? just wondering for other websites i plan on making |
|

ya dude, that's perfect! ya you have to use a DNS, you can try and run your own, I haven't done it before, and I have some friends who're trying and they can't figure it out.
You can't just point to your IP straight from the domain name, I've triedm it doesn't work. When you purchase a domain name, you will be able to manage it, mainly you have to enter the Primary and Secondary Name Servers(DNS's).
When a web browser request a page the browser looks to the DNS Entry, the DNS entry in turn points to the IP adress for the site.
It's definately possible to run your own DNS, I'm sure it's fairly easy. I just don't know anyone who'se actually got it up and running, and working. We can use mine at work. |

| I'm not sure if Tinman is still around. If he is, ask or PM him. He can probably help you guys out with a domain. If not, ask Markis if he can get into contact for you guys. Domains are cheap these days for a year. Its like 20 bucks us a year for a domain with .com. |
