What to do, someone dinged my door up pretty bad on my nearly mint truck... - Click HERE for Original Thread

Dan_s_young
Hey guys,
I have a older truck, a 1991 GMC 1500. Sure its not the rarest of vehicles, but this one is in NEAR mint condition. Anyone who knows me knows im obsessed about my vehicles, keeping them clean and shining like you wouldn't believe.

Anyways heres my story. I washed my truck on the 25th, so it was looking awesome and clean. With my truck I always park away from other traffic and stuff in parking lots because I know how people are. Anyways on the 26th of July, me and my friend went to a movie at sherwood park mall.

When we came out there was a fricking dodge omni (crappiest car ever) parked right beside my truck and I immediately noticed a (what I would consider) large ding and 3 scratches through the ding. It was offious someone getting out of the back of the car slammed there door into the side of my truck. (note this vehicle was not there when we went into the movie, like I said I park away from everyone...)

Well I freaked out, my truck is rust free and has only been winter driven once... So we waited for the people who did this to my truck. It was offious to me and my friend that it was some punk teenagers, because there was a 30 dollar subwoofer and box on the passenger floor (Jensen LOL).

So we sat in my truck and waited for them to come back... About a hour passed and 3 kids came out and were looking at the car. I asked if it was there's and they answered that it was there friends. I told them they better get there friend over here right now because he dinged my door and he was in serious trouble. He then said he had no idea where his friend was etc etc. He said he may be in the movie theatre. So I said to him, go in and if you see him send him right out... The fricking kid didn't think it was a big deal, he said to me "man how about we toke up and forget all about this..." Of course im like, uhhhhh how about not... So offiously this kids car was filled with stoned kids.

We wait about another hour and 4 more kids come along. We ask them if they own the vehicle, of course they don't so I play along and say im waiting for the driver. They then reply "oh you know Skyler" so bang I know the drivers name, I told them to find him and send him right out. He then said that he came in the vehicle with "skyler" but apparently no one was in the back seat. So I asked oh really so you sat with your feet on the dash? Theres a sub on the floor. The kid then told me uhhhh we put the sub against the seat, total BS, it was offious this kid was stoned. These kids also tried indimidating me and my friend (we are both 19 and about 180 pounds, they are about 15-16 and 100-120 pounds...) they told us that the friend who owned the vehicle was native american and bigger than us.

I honestly didn't care at all, like how lame of a threat is that. I just wanted to talk to the kid not fight him and even then im not one who gets frightened like that... lol

Anyways another period of time passes and im getting sick of this BS. They told us the whole walk around of excuses. One of the kids even admitted oh ya there was that one kid in the back who hit the door there. But then he ran off...

Now here is where my question lies. I have this dudes license plate number, name. VIN number, car make, if I goto the local police station is there really anything they can do? I would really like the damages paid for, should I go to a body shop get a estimate and take it in to the police station?

Its not everyday you catch someone who vandalizes your vehicle, thats why im not going to let this slide. My truck has been vandalized over 3 times in the last 2 weeks. Im sick of it...

(sorry for the long read)

Vive le Quebec
that's sick...jeez, why won't people live up to their faults.

not sure what you could do though...i'm assuming it's <$1000 damage, right?

File a police report, and if the police officer believes your story he can charge the driver with hit and run (Or failure to remain at the scene or something).

Further, you can also make a claim with your insurance company. The success of this all depends on what the other guy writes in his police statement. If he denies everything (Which I assume he will) it'll be a tough battle....

I think your looking up a dead horses ass. Good luck if you do the right thing.

I wouldn't go through insurance. If the damages are less that 1000 you're really just making trouble for yourself. The deductable is probably going to cost more than the repair. Unless the other driver agrees with everything, I don't think you're going to get much support from anyone. But, regardless of all that, you kept your cool... Which is more than I woulda done, sadly. Theres a lot you could do to a car in that hour you waited.

seriously though, keep a disposable camera with you that way you have some kind of proof to back up what you're saying.

LMAO!!!

Anyway, I second Trevor's advice regarding the police.
But I don't think your insurance company can really help you in this case... not without it costing you more in the end.

This won't work as both vehicles were stationary and this type of incedent now is a civil matter. The police will not take a report or do anything about it. so don't waste your time. the only thing you can do now is take the registered owner to small claims court. You can file a claim yourself at any court office for a fee of $100 you don't need a lawyer, just have a copy of three estamates on your court date and any notes you made at the scene. You get to say your piece in court and the judge will determine fault and remediation.

Hope this helps out. Cheers :dunno:

Your best bet for reducing chance of door dings is parking beside a couple of late madle cars that are clean and perfect, Then you know the owner takes as much care as you do. I you park a nice vehicle off by itself those little F#@&en stonners will get you every time.
