Exhasut tips???? What's the legality of a 4" tip? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Forddemon666
I was reading some threads on here and i was wondering...if my whole exhaust consist of 1 1/4 inch pipe all the way through... if add a 4 inch flowtech tip will in then there forth become illegal since it does not coherre with the size of the rest of the pipes..or does it really matter?

95EagleAWD
I'll say it's illegal just because it's pointless... ;)

Yeah, with a four inch fart cannon on the back of your car, you'd be a primo target for a bored EPS Constable.

dc2696
Oh man, the rice police would bust ur ass, and rightfully so.

Forddemon666
So your sayin that id have to replace to whole piping from the catalyic converter all the way through???????? it might be a Ford tempo but i got it nice

McFly
inlet needs to be the exact same size as the outlet.:)

I have a 3" tip on my car, not big at all but it still gets attention from the RCMP here in Leduc.

SilverNeonRacer
If it's a non resonated tip and you still have a proper muffler, legally it would be fine, but a 4".... umm no.. I'd say 2.5" tops anything bigger than that it'll look like rice...

Hyon11
why would you want a 4" tip on a ford tempo anyways?

chevyguy
I have a four inch outle on my muffler and havent had any troubles with the police at all. I have been pulled over a few times and all the officer asked about my car if the rims were stock, which they werent. If you guys classify a four inch outlet muffler as rice, wut could i replace it with that would give me a nice sound, and good performance?? The one i have sound nice buts it is a fart can i guess.

SilverNeonRacer
Borla makes some good stuff that sounds good, but not really loud, and it's good quality stuff...

They make fart cannons too though if you want a muffler with a built in tip.

Get a 13" oval muffler and a nice 2.25" or 2.5" rolled tip.

I have a borla 13" turbo muffler on my V8, sounds good, but still fairly quiet, not much louder than stock.

Forddemon666
i mean as far as the one guy who stated why would i want a exhaust tip on a tempo..ima self taught mechaninc ive dropped a 04 mustang enigine under the hood..new DOHC Double overhead cams...the car is about 2 inchs off the ground..i have a bodykit all the way around. its a tempo but its def...not a tempo..i just dont know about legality ..but if they make the exhaust tip to speciafication of a 2" inlet and and a 4" outlet why would it be illegal if they make it like that?

SilverNeonRacer
Possibly noise....

If you get a borla or a brand name one sometimes you'll get a cert card that says it meets SAE or DOT standards.

But fart cannons on a v8 or v6 sound like crap.. get a real muffler, then you should be fine with a 2" - 4" tip, and I mean tip...

Soulfly
It ALL Depends on the Type of car..

Some cars Can get away with it.. and Look Clean..

I Myself Have a 4" 'Tip' And I've received an Enlarged exhaust outlet ticket...

NOT Too Fun when I paid $450+ For a Stainless Exhaust.. and Had to pay another $115 Over top.

Also.. Not a smart choice on a Full stainless Exhaust.. But It's the style I wanted.. and It was convenient at the time.

they will try to give you tickets depending on where and how you drive. But the tickets aren't worth the paper they are scribbled on, as long as you show up to court dressed nicely, and politely state that there's no specific size limits at all written in the laws
.
If that's not too big of a hassle for ya, then go nuts.

PICS OF THE TEMPO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That Sure DID NOT Work In my favour...

They didn't even Bother to Open up their Big book Of lies, and Regulations.. Not even the Time to defend their side of the case..

And I QUOTE the Crown.. "You're exhaust is, basicly, a "Shit-Magnet".

At that Point.. I gave up.. Said Fuck you.. and How much do I owe..

NEXT TIME, However.. I Will be fighting it again, If by chance I get another ticket.

And I wasn't driving 'outragious' .. I was Heading east on yellowhead and turned off north onto 97th street.. and I didn't slow down for the turn.. Because It's a LONG Easy turn.. so I continued to go 60-65 km/h then sped up to 70-75km/h MAX.

I also Said this to the Police Officer. Because He 'THOUGHT' I was going Mach 10 down 97th. I refused the speeding ticket.. so He walked around my car.. and Found My exhaust...

End of story.. the rest is history.

Hyon11
sounds like a quick car, not the usual tempo agreed. pics

Hi Forddemon666,

I believe how you drive, and the level of noise coming from your exhaust will determine if you get pulled over for an exhaust violation or not.

On my Supra I am running a watermellon shooter. It is the HKS Dragger 120mm Diameter tip. A pic can be found here. http://www.hksusa.com/images/?id=1151

I have only been warned for the tip once on Whyte ave and that was a few years ago. The car infront of me was a riced out civic that had an exhaust on it that would make your ear drums bleed when the car was stepped on. I am assuming the officer got mixed up as the civic blew through a Red light on a right hand turn, leaving me to be the supposed culprit of the noise.

I have driven by, infront of and passed countless cruisers and yes, even with the cruiser windows were down in some instances, and have never been pulled over.

I get some looks of WTF is that tip, and it has been looked at when I watch them in the rear view mirror, or in my mirrors, but that is as far as it goes.

If you are doing exhaust work, may I suggest if you are taking your cats out, to install a resinator. This will reduce the amount of noise coming from your non turbo/supercharged engine.

:bs:

The 4.6 isn't going to fit under the hood of a Tempo. I've seen a couple Yamahammer 3.0s squeezed in there, and that was with chunks of the fenders cut away, and MAJOR subframe surgery. Even if you are talking about the V6, it's still a waste of time, because the power gains aren't going to be worth the hassle. Please don't waste peoples time here.

Why would you only have 2" exhaust? that's a little small for a 4.6 DOHC engine. you should have 2 1/4" or depending on the power 2 1/2". as for mufflers don't go rice.

lovinthespeed
ya this sounds a little fishy to me to. my friend has a tempo and he barly has room for cold air man there tight. i guess it depends on the year. and ya get a muffler you like dont car wat others say if its a ricer or not. yes i drive a ricer lol

Forddemon666
i order me a cam..but yea as far as your freind with a temp[o loook under his hood next time he'll have i'd say as a guess about 4-5" all the way around the outskirts..at least mine did.:fingersx:

dtjohnst
Like others have said, how does it sound?

The law only says you must have a muffler that works at all times the engine is running which prevents excessive or unusual noise. Does it make your car sound unusual? Does it prevent the noise from being excessive?

Kicker is, that's open to interpretation. What's "unusual"? It'd come down to what the judge/maistrate believes if you get a ticket and try to fight it.

As has been said though, you'll be a shit magnet.

So it is perfectly legal to have a full 3" exhaust or a full 4" exhaust? It's just when you go from a different sized inlet to a different sized outlet then theres a problem?

quote:
Vehicle Equipment Regulation of Alberta
61(2) A person shall not drive or operate a motor vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine if the exhaust outlet of the muffler has been widened.

It has nothing to do with inlet vs outlet. It has to do with widening the outlet. So if you replace the standard tip with a ginormous one, regardless of what the inlet size is, you've broken the law the second you start it up. Even if that tip makes it quieter or doesn't change the noise at all. The law is very plain here. Don't widen the exhaust outlet of your muffler. Follow that, and you're golden.

Bear in mind, your "new" muffler must comply with the rest of 61 as well. Namely, it must make your car quiet. So if you run out and buy a muffler that's 9" thick and makes your car sound like it's a fighter jet, you won't be legal.
