Mobius
Right on!

Ammo
ok so heres the problem, i tried to start her this morning but she wont start (first time trying) there are no engine noises or any thing that would indicate it trying to start. any ideas on what the problem is and how i can fix it?

any and all help would be greatly appriciated

Mobius
Did you check the battery? Is the starter there? Is it hooked up?Does the starter work? If yes, yes, yes, and yes; can you spin the engine over by hand? (Make sure it is out of gear ;) )

Ammo
the batteries new, wheres the starter on this thing? lol (still kinda new to rotarys and havent exactly had the time to look in depthe into them) spin the engine over by hand:confused:

Mobius
Look under the car by the driver side door. It's mounted alongside the bell housing of the transmission. Sping the engine over by hand: Grab a belt that goes to the main crank pulley (ex. alternator belt) and try to spin the pullies (looking at the engine from the front of the car it spins clockwise). Or you can roll the car down a hill or pull it in gear with the ignition off and see if it turns over freely (ie wheels rear wheels don't lock up/ skid). If you cant turn it over then your apex seals may be cabon locked to the housings?

SilviaDrifter
do a comp test see if ur gettting any compression ur rear rotor

Ammo
SHE LIVES!! omfg the stupid battery was on wrong and i blew like 3 80A fuses trying to figure out what was wrong:mad:

ok so now i have engine noise but the car wont start. any ideas?

rear rotor usually locks before front........but it might be the front

It's not locked, he had the + and - mixed up on the battery :D
But upon reading it again you're talking about the seals being stuck, rotating freely but no compression?

Ammo:

Check for spark, check for fuel, check to see if u have good compression, and check to see if u can find anything unplugged and check to see if you can find any vacuum hoses cracked or broken.

Ammo
my neighbour helped me check for a spark and he said it was good.
As for fuel I might go and get some tomorrow and try again. As for things being unplugged, there’s quite a few plugs that have nothing plugged in them but I cant seem to find anything to plug in them  . Nothing seems to be broken or cracked.

My neighbour thinks the engine is flooded. If so, how can I fix this? Could this be the problem?:dunno: The guy who had it before me thinks it might be the fuel pump seeing as he had the same problem with it turning over but not starting. Is that it?:dunno:

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Really wanna get her on the road!:fingersx:

Mobius
It could be flooded. If it is, then you need to pull out the upper (trailing) spark plugs, set them aside. (make sure you remember which plug wires went where). Pull out the EGI COMP and EGI INJ fuses from the fuse block in the engine compartment (skinny black box on the driver side strut tower). Now crank the engine over and let it blow any excess fuel out of the spark plug holes. Clean the plugs off, reassemble and see if she starts. While you're playing with the plugs out, do a quick compression test.

Ammo
now when im doing this, im giving no gas right?

Transporter
you are never to pump the gas pedal in your ..it is electronic fuel injected.. if that is what u did teh first time, that is probably how ut flooded it

**there is exceptions to every guideline**

Doing it the way I described it does not matter if you press on the gas or not. You pulled the fuse for the injectors so no fuel will be injected regardless of pedal position.

If you have an S5 (89-91) then you can push the gas pedal all the way to the floor and then crank it over as a quick unflood, and you dont have to disconnect any fuses or take out the spark plugs. However, for S4's (86-88) this does not work.

In any case, doing the fuse/spark plug method is the most thorough.

Transporter
hence why i said exception.. i only do that to mya car after i take it out of storage casue i fill the housing with light sewing machine oil when i store the car.

i don't want my seals to dry up on rock!!!

Ammo
OMG! SHE STARTED! and then it died after a few seconds while i was rejoicing  and now she wont start again:( help me plz!

Mobius
:) How is the compression? Pull out the top 2 plugs and check to see if they are wet with fuel, if they are do the unflooding again. How did it run? Did it idle? Was it rough?

SilviaDrifter
CHECK COMPRESSION!!!!!!

Ammo
it was a rough idle. i usually only get the mornings to work on my car since i work at night so i dont really have alot of time to work on it but ill try to get a compression test done tommorow if i have time. what numbers should i be looking for or range of numbers?

SilviaDrifter
i would say nothing less than 75 even 80 is a lil low....

SilverFire
With all this talk about pulling spark plugs & fuses to unflood, nobody asked about the fuel-cut switch...

Do you have a switch under the dash somewhere that looks like it isn't factory? Mine is a push-button.

Flooding is such a common problem that Mazda actually did a recall (?I think?) on at least FCs to put a switch in so that you don't have to do all that. I doesnt really work all that well if it badly flooded, but most of the time it just takes a couple seconds with it pressed to start. I'd bet if it's flooded again, that's all you need.

Of course, we still need to figure out why it didn't stay running. I had the vacuum hose issue too. If they're old and look like they COULD be cracked, I'd replace them. I keep meaning to do it myself, then something more important pops up...

Mobius
I'm thinking there may be a clogged fuel filter? It burned off the residue fuel in the lines, and then died. A fuel cutoff switch is also a possibility.

I didn't know they had a factory recall to install a cutoff switch. I thought that was aftermarket only. If it was a recall, why is it that they didn't install a computerized fuel delay on the RX8's until the CPU flash L? (or was it M, I can't remember). That should have been a given from the get go no?

Hope you get it running!

Ammo
ok so i did the comp test and i got bout 105~110 psi for the front and like nothing for the back. i take it this is not good.... can i fix this myself?

i found a switch that was a push. so for future reference, to start it, hold the switch down and crank the car?

SilviaDrifter
seee i knew i the rear rotor was locked........

Ammo
so can i fix that or replace it? or do i need a new engine?

Transporter
well i work morning that i why i have been unable to assist you..

you can try little ATF to unlock the rear rotor...but keep in mind the damge is already done and if u get it unloacked don't push to hard ... and rebuilt as soon as possible

Here is a thread on the subject.

Ammo
so i finally got the time to looking into a fuel filter change. but heres the problem, i think this is the fuel filter (according to some fourms ive visited)

but the fuel filter that i got from canadian tire that said was for this car looks like this

if this is the wrong filter, where can i get the correct one?

also, when i was trying to locate my fuel filter, i found this

any ideas what these are supposed to connect to?? should they be connected to something? if so what am i missing that these should be attatched to?

now
first the filter looks right.

2nd those hoses are not connected to anything
one is a vent for the charcoal can and the other is a drain
for a/c

Ammo
which spark plugs are best for these cars? and also, i just got a ractive air filter but theres an extra hose comming from the air pump with no where to go into. do i need to buy a smaller filter for this? if so, where can i get it from?
