Go-Kart Tracks in Edmonton - Click HERE for Original Thread

DarrylBleau
Hey, does anyone know of a good go-kart track to run at in or around Edmonton? I'm just looking for a casual 'get your buddies together and go' sort of thing, I know of stratotech, not quite what I was looking for :).

McFly
if you have enough people stratotech is good.

if not you can hit up whitemud amusment park which is much cheaper but not as fun.

nismokutz
whitemud amusment park is a fun place if u use the faster go karts then play bumper cars....lol well i thought it was fun...:D

nismokutz

Mavrick
I think there is also Speed Zone Kart Raceway at West Edmonton Mall. I know I've had lots of fun on that track before.

nismokutz
didn't they take that out and put a kids play place in????

McFly
yup closed down 4 years ago prob.

lovinthespeed
ya i now we need a ton more but whyte mud amusment park is the best man there faster bumper cars and fun to randomly hit the breaks and see how many you can pill up lol i was there today cheap to

nismokutz
haha yes

DarrylBleau
Yeah we went, it was ok I guess. Here's my review, for future reference:

Cars were slow and there was a wide variance in power between cars which made it kind of silly to try and 'compete'. No timing gear, just pay your cash and jump in the car and go (when it's time for the 'fast' carts to go, which seemed to be every 5-10 minutes). The track is set up so care bear that you can take the entire course WOT, and in fact, half the carts have no brakes at all (as in, 0). All in all, very 'amusement park', kid-friendly, but the autox'ers in the crowd would find it boring.

Ya they need fast tracks back in WEM . I remeber me and Mr.Precida went on the last day before it closed. They told us they were reopening in a couple months. Never did happen... it was fun there.

Wheres that Strato... place? I've been to Whitemud lots but i agree the cars are not evenly match for any racing, just good for bumper cars.

Just goes to show how often I go to the mall if it has been gone that long and I didn't know about it.

That's too bad though, I quite enjoyed the track at WEM. I obviously should have gone there more often.

Stratotech is a way better track then Fast Track was. Only problem is you can't go year round. :(

DarrylBleau
I've never been to stratotech but my assumption is that it's not exactly the kind of place you just show up at and rent a kart and go... or is it?

SilverZ24
I think as long as there isn't an event of some sort booked anyone can go. But I've been a member so some of the times might be members only. :dunno: I've never actually thought about it. I'm heading there again Friday and I'll try to find out.

thats not true we rip it hard atleast once a week...and theres a difference between playin bumper cars and holding a line...the last 3 weeks we have broke 4 carts and were still welcome back:dunno:

Ive never noticed to much in difference between carts...Also if you going to sit back in your seat and through your weight around in the corners you won't carry like you would if you actually get into it and lean in...theres tons of fun after about 4 road pops lol

nismokutz
i don't like drivingthem cuz i always get the slowest one.....lol. i'm just to fat to race in them..haha

I used to take my boy karting in Spruce Grove, but they shut down the track there a couple of years ago, it may have been the same year as the WEM track closed. I talked to the guy running the place (owner?) and he claimed huge insurance hikes had made it a money losing proposition. Supposedly there was a few big insurance settlements from accidental deaths.

I did a quick search, and this site has a couple of cases: http://www.thebarnesfirm.com/CM/Pra...riptions140.asp

Girl, 3, killed in Illinois go-cart crash

(Saturday, July 1, 2000) - A 3-year-old girl died after a go-cart accident at Hi-Speed Race Karts race track in Palatine, Illinois. The accident happened on Friday night. The car in which the victim and her 21-year-old mother were riding collided with another car which had spun out directly in front of them. The girl was riding in between her mother's legs at the time of the accident. When the two cars collided, she was crushed between the steering wheel and her mother's body.

The steering wheel was padded, in accordance with state safety regulations, and authorities found no defects in the brakes, steering or tires. However, none of the go-carts had seat belts, and a sign posted at the front entrance to the ride states: "Every rider must be 5 feet tall, all riders must sign release."

The Palatine Police Department has confiscated the go-carts which crashed. The accident is under investigation.

Wisconsin jury awards $1 billion in case against go-kart manufacturer

(Wednesday, January 13, 1999) - A jury in Milwaukee County has awarded $1 billion in punitive damages in a case against Johnson Kart Manufacturing of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The lawsuit was filed after a 32 year old woman died as a result of burns which she sustained in a go-kart accident in Pensacola, Florida in June of 1992. The accident happened after the kart in which the victim was riding, which was built and sold by the Milwaukee company, burst into flames. The woman was trapped in the car for more than two minutes, as gasoline poured from the 2-gallon fuel tank and burned all around her. Attempts to rescue the victim from the vehicle were unsuccessful, as the intense heat from the blaze kept back by-standers. The woman finally fell from the vehicle after the seat belt which she was wearing burned through.

The award in that second case is big enough to kill a few cart tracks, holy crap...

There were rumours that a go-kart place was going to take one of the levels of where Playdium was... but I wouldn't be surprised if they turned down what the Mall was asking for. Biggest mall in the world = highest lease rates.

I also heard when it came time for the lease renewal for Playdium was far too demanding, that's why they left.

Off topic but I think the Mall lost on that one... they haven't been able to get someone to go downstairs. But then again, do the bothers really care? They can afford having empty spots

Paid for back in the day by tax dollars that should have made our tuitions cheaper or kept more hospitals open back during all the closures :tear:
