Hi,
I figured this would be the best place to post this.
I am currently a 3rd year apprentice and am very frustrated with the wage i receive. I feel it is much to low. However I love where i work and especially the cars i work on. I am at a luxury car dealership. However i am debating leaving due to this. I am not bad at what i do and am very valuable to the company. The other techs who apprenticed here as well also had a poor wage. I want to stop this.
I would like to get a good idea as to what this industry is paying apprentice technicians and really find out if im getting shafted or not. I would like to put up an argument with my boss.
So what Im asking of all you other apprentices is if you do not mind post a salary that you or any other apprentice you know of is making being a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year.
I know you guys may not want to post your wage so just ignore this all then. Im only asking you to do so if your totally comftoralbe with it.
I thank you all very much.

Are you being paid for straight time or a flat rate? I know 1st and 2nd year for sure are required to be paid only in straight time. Not sure about 3rd/4th years though.

Isn't 3rd year suppose to be paid about 75%ish of the journeymans wage at the dealership? Some journymans don't make much if they are just doing less challenging tasks. Like a journeyman doing trim work would have a wage that is less than lets say a journeyman specializing engine...So your employer doesn't have to pay you the highest possible..

If its Flat rate then... you just gotta work with it and find a way to beat it.

I'm looking to be an apprentice within the next year so any additional info would benefit me also.

I am not flat rate, im straight time, but i think i want to go to a shop were my productivity will be recognized in my paycheck. Im well aware of the percentages that apprentices are suppose to make and i am being paid the correct percentage, however my employer is paying me based on what he believes is the Alberta average wage. Which no journeyman in my shop is paid. They make at least $4 more then what the supposed Alberta average is. I think that is BS. I should be paid based on the lowest paid journeyman in the shop.

Whats your shop journeyman rate, customer rate...and what are you getting paid.

1st years where I work get around 18 an hour.

My advice to you is to quit...techs are in such high demand right now that you can go anywhere and find the right pay that you want within a day. Why waste time when you can transfer your book to another shop and get paid more. Its an employees market...especially with experience now, you are more valuble than most right now.

A quick search netted 120 listings for mechanics in the edmonton area.

Over the last 3.5 years I've had 3 jobs...each one paying more than the last. I've been working at Volvo Trucks for the last 1.5 years and like it alot. But I just put in my notice
to leave for another job that pays more. Take advantage of the situation...dont bother with these guys paying you less when some other guy is getting paid more for doing the same or even less work.

good luck;)

Wow that sucks. You should find another place to work at man..Isn't that illegal? Doesn't it state in the contract that you have to be paid a certain amount? You should be paid according to the journeymans rate. My instructor said that if they pay you to that amount then your employer could get in alot of trouble. Not sure about that but I'll be sure to look into it tomarrow..
