Grrrrrrrrrrr!
a friend asked me to repair a PC, and she somehow screwed up the registry by trying to install Nero7 overtop of Nero6. Now, both are uninstalled as far as I can get, but the registry entries for Nero7 are preventing 6 from being installed. I can't do anything with those registry entries, when I click on them, it says "error while opening key". when I try to delete them, it says "error while deleting key".
I tried several registry cleaners and fixers including System Mech 6 pro, but they all wont' touch these keys.
I even tried to back up and then restore the registry, but it stays the same.
how is this possible? |

| Did you try deleting the registries while in safe mode. You are using regedit.exe to do this right? |

| same thing in safe mode... and yes, regedit |

| Instead of removing it, can you rename it? |
|

| use rgedt32 instead of regedit |

it's all still getting the same error, renaming, regedt32(not what you typed), and safemode. she's corrupt!
anything else? |

sorry I mistyped regedt32 spelling nazi :P
are you able to reinstall nero 7 then do a proper uninstall or did she only have the upgrade version?
have you tried a repair install of windows to rewrite the registry? |

| Just to let you know, if it is a pirated version of Nero this is a known issue. Nero has specifically made it so that if you install the pirated version of one copy, it will permanantly embed itself in your registry not allowing another version of newer date being able to be installed over top of it. From what I gather you have to do a re-format. |

| I've had a pirated version, then installed a registered version and didnt have a problem. |

Im referring to pirated over pirated. I dont know if this is the case being asked but, here is a quote right from the site.
quote: 20. After launching Nero I get the error message 'This may be a pirated version of Nero'. What does this mean?
This message occurs if more than one customer has registered the same serial number.
To resolve, please send us an e-mail (sales@nero.com) which includes your name, address, e-mail, your Nero serial number and a proof of purchase.
Our sales team will confirm your valid purchase and provide you with another serial number for replacement.
