Importing a Car from over seas - Click HERE for Original Thread

GOT BOOST
Hi Everyone,

I have decided to compile a list of FAQ that appear to show up in threads. What I will be doing is posting a question and will be looking for your responses. With these responses I will then summurize them in a post and post them in the archives with an appropriate title. These threads will be stickied for about a week while the information comes in.

Please be specific with your information and provide details and little tips.

Todays topic is importing cars from over seas.

Post away.

Truely it's totally doable but Godzilla is right. It is quite simply the biggest hassel ever. And nevermind the stress you have waiting for it to come, wondering if it's what they say it is. Is the auction sheet correct? It usually isnt completely accurate because the inspections are only minutes long. How about the things that are overlooked in the auction inspection ( Tie rods, control arms, etc.) THESE THINGS CAN ADD UP! Then when it lands you have to pass OOP and odds are if it has anything over 100 000km it will fail. Using an import company to do all the dirty work and pass OOP is well worth the mark up, which might i add seems to be getting smaller and smaller due to the increasing number of competing comapanies. And, the single most important thing i think, is you can see, drive, as well as privately inspect the vehicle if its landed.

I have imported from over seas and its definitly NOT the ridiculously easy and risk free process its made out to be. Think about your car being damaged in shipping. It happened to me, and cost over $1000 which is a big deal when most of the people buying these cars are younger and have a limited budget. As for making an insurance claim, which i did, i was basically told "Were in Japan and your in Canada, dont even bother". And just to put it all in perspective, my car was THOUSANDS over what i originally budgeted. I really hope people read this because i always here high school kids talking about bringing cars over and it is very obvious to me that they have NO IDEA what they are even getting into.

Leave it to the experts and let them take the risk for you.

Thats just my opinion so dont rip me apart.

All i can say is do your homework!

Know everything you can about the car you are looking to import.
R32, S13, A31, soarer, supra, FD3s, all have different issues. Early bulid cars have often more problems then later ones.

in some cases you get 2 pics and an auction sheet. you have to know what your looking for. My skyline had rust that was not on the auction sheet, and there is nothing i could do.

With my silvia. i hand picked it. I sent a mechanic to look at the car before i spent all the money. I might have paid a bit more for the car but i knew what i was buying. The JDM is quite different then the CDM.

Oh yeah don't just buy the first one you see.

My 2 cents

Can someone do a write-up on how to import a car yourself?

Has anyone ever imported a car from Europe? More specifically Germany? I have family there and have been considering importing a couple BMWs. If anyone has any info whatsoever it'd be appreciated.
