What do I need to do to purchase a car in Canada? - Click HERE for Original Thread

GOT BOOST
Hi Everyone,

I have decided to compile a list of FAQ that appear to show up in threads. What I will be doing is posting a question and will be looking for your responses. With these responses I will then summerize them in a post and post them in the archives with an appropriate title. These threads will be stickied for about a week while the information comes in.

Please be specific with your information and provide details and little tips.

Todays topic is Purchasing a car. What does one need to do, what should I look for, how do I bring it home?

Post away.

Go see what you can qualify for first, either with the bank or the dealership, depending on the best interest rate.

Then you'll have a ballpark on what you can afford, so you can start looking.

Another idea is to check out www.edmonds.com for reviews, Also check out the lemon aide used car buyers guide from Chapters. Hint, you do not need to buy the book, go there find what you are looking for and leave. Just like visiting the library except you have newer books. :D

Check out www.canadatrader.com for comparable models.

Call AMA's consumer affairs line to get the Gold Book Value, not black book.

There have got to be more people out there that have purchased a car before other than us.

Etc.

Don't use carfax in Canada. Its useless and inaccurate. Go to a registries branch and pay $10-$20 and get a lien search done. You can also ask how many previous owners there were, if it has repaired title, etc.

If you leave a deposit, get a receipt!

I'll disagree on that, i went to calkgary to pick upa car ran the search threw the registry came up clean, so i bought it brought it home drove it for a few weeks, then ran a carfax, you wouldn't believe what i found out about it, put it this way the car was not, and never was in the states, but i ended up selling it within the next week.

Hi 180sxforthewin,

Thank you for clearing that up. I invite you to re read my originial post especially where it states "Please be specific with your information and provide details and little tips."

I believe this info and more detail would be very usefull in the other thread I created on importing cars from over seas.

Thank you,

Mike

Well I figured that the word Japan would give it away.

Yes, if you are purchasing a car from there. This thread is not about that. That is why I created this thread shortly after. http://forums.780tuners.com/showthr...;threadid=48293

So you open an account then what? You wait for the car to magicaly appear or need to order it, talk to an importer etc. I am sure most people have bank accounts. :D

Lets pretend not everyone reads minds here. See where I am going. I am trying to compile a list of FAQ with detailed answers. This will help reduce the ammount of questions that we get that are the same, or are the same format.

A few other helpfull tip would be is to conisder what you are going to use the vehicle for? Limit your choices down to three and test drive them and decide from the best.

Mike
