e46 m3 vs 996 carrera - Click HERE for Original Thread

boarderfatty
I have been trying to narrow down my choices for the car that I will be picking up next spring and have gotten it down to either the e46 m3 or a 996 carrera coupe or carrera 4s coupe. I know these cars are both very different but was looking for input from fellow euro owners that have had experiences in these cars. I am looking for input on stock performance, costs(since i am only 19 and a student), moddability, maintainance issues, practicality(daily driven over summer months), and what will hold their resale value the best because i am hoping to get a 996 turbo the following year and would like to get some $$$ from the current car.

thanks for any input

sell the m3 and build a turbo 328. it will be way quicker than any of those other cars:lol:

why not just stick ith the e36? you are a student for frick sakes. what do you need a porsche for when you are only 19? an e36 m3 is more than enough? and the nice thing with the e36 is there are tons of mods available that are always comign down in price and there are not so complex that you cannot do the work yourself.

I want a new car because my dad will buy me a new one every year as a business vehicle for his company, so thats why i want a new car, easier for him to write off the car than mods.

Also i want something newer, that looks more cash money, imagine rolling through the parking lot of school in your own porsche

The number 1, and number 2 reasons why I rarely show up to "car meets".

But to answer your questions:

1/ stock performance - C4S
2/ costs (maintanence, since you're not paying for the actual car) - they're all expensive to maintain, M3 is probably the cheapest.
3/ moddability - all the same... M3 is probably the cheapest though
4/ maintainance issues - all the same
5/ practicality - M3
6/ resale - C4S and M3 are good, regular Carerra is probably the worst of the bunch.

Hope that helps.

Yep, agreed.

That's really sad. Some people will grow up never understanding the true value of a dollar.

um yeah, you dont look as cool as you think because everybody knows how you got it. nothing wrong with parents buying you a car but this sounds excessive and rediculous. lots of young kids that get very fast cars end up killing themselves or somebody else because they do not know how to handle a powerful car.

style and performance wise i think the e46 m3 would be the best. unless you re going to get a turbo stick with the bmw.

It's not that I dont respect the money (I have 2 parttime jobs, worked 3 summers on my uncles farm working constructon, cement, in the shop, and opperating machinery, and apprentace with my dad ontop of school, so its not like i have never had to earn a dollar. I get 20,000 towards a new car instead of pay from my dad cause its easier for him to write off) or the car, I have a passion for cars, ad realaize that i am in a fortunate enough position to have my passion supported. I also love to wrench on my own cars ( did fmic setup, suspension, and exhaust on my talon, maintainance on my m3, tranny swap and body work on a friends del sol, body work on his 180sx, sr20 swap and body on 1 240, and a ka swap on another)so i know what i have and appriciate the engineering the engineering and work that have to go into it. Thats why i was thinking the m3 would be the easiest for me to work on, since i would like to do the maintainance and some of the modifications myself on the new car.

I also thought i would add when i said i wanted something cash money for rollin around the parking lot it was laced with sarcasm, and meant more towards picking up the ladies, and that i have to come up with the difference on the car from the $$ that my dad pays which will be close to double what my dad is giving, and nowhere near what i will get from the sale of my car, so i still have to earn a few paychecks to make the difference.

The E46 M3 would be the only one I'd choose. But it seems like your big on the "status" symbol, so maybe you'd like the Porscha just for the badge.

IMO, just something to think about. Girls don't know shit about cars mostly, they really just like to know what color it is and if looks "pretty". So stop trying to impress the ones you are talking about because they are materialistic and are not worth having around. I can see where your coming from if you want to hump em and dump em but, i'm sure the E36 could do that if you had skillz. I mean an E46 would take the fun out of the game; too easy!

But in all honestly do what you feel best with. If you need a E46 of 996 to feel happy and can afford it, I suppose the quesetion is why wouldn't you?

Good luck man.

If you are just looking for girls, go with a Smart cabrio. Last summer I spent most hot days driving around in either a Smart cabrio or a Porsche Boxster and sadly enough the Smart car got way more attention from girls. I constantly had girls asking for rides in the car. Mostly in the 16-18 range too. lol

The Prosche got looks, but the Smart car 'could' have got a lot more action.

For the record though, I really hated the Smart car after the novelty wore off, plus if you have another guy with you you look totally gay. The Porsche on the other hand was amazing to drive. Between the handling and the sound of the motor I could have drivin the car all day.

Too bad I only got to drive it while my boss was trying to sell it. But for just over a month it was pimp. :)
