Good paying "skill less" jobs??? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Insomniac
I have a friend looking for work, and as we know, EVERYBODY seems to be hiring.

What are some jobs/employers that are paying well for jobs that don't really have qualifications other than being trainable and intelligent?

About my friend: University grad, can't get job in field, looking for work for income, very nice guy, very good with people.

joker
I am looking for people, starting at 14/hr if he has a DL. PM me if you want more details

ehos
What's his field?

If he has a degree, he can get a fairly high paying job in alot of normally 'closed' industries, especially if he's willing to start at the bottom and work up.

Even people with 'useless' degrees are making big bucks because of companies know that a degree is much better than nothing. (For example, the 'enviro. engineer' at my bro's company is just a BA - Philosophy! Making 150G's a year).

And philo is almost as useless as it gets...

My buddy works doing insulation, make 16-17/hour, but he gets enough OT to get 1400-1600 after tax every two weeks.

He should be able to step in and get any of those construction labour jobs that aren't trades.

gerrycurl
anyone know any good parttime jobs for students?

Kiddo
pm'ed you with pretty high paying jobs

my retarded (figuratively speaking) roommate just signed up for a Laborers Union... he's making ~$23/ hour to be on "man watch" - which means he counts people going into a hole, and makes sure the same number of people come out. :dunno: no high school required, haha

It does, i work around the trucks everyday, and with this tire shortage they are pushing those tires to the limit.. Its going to kill someone one of these days if it stays like this.

If he has an Ed and Music degree why doesn't he just give lessons for now? Tons of kids are glued to instruments by their parents. With his certifications I'm sure he'll manage for the time being.

My gf's cousin did a music degree and is teaching at Alberta college now. Maybe they still need instructors?

Snag a trade? like plumbers apprentice doesn;'t need much tools you learn a trade and make decent cash + medical , and everyone needs trades people

It isn't a car wash, but a truck rental place and we are always looking for someone extra in the shop washing the trucks when they come back from rent. And since most of these trucks come from Fort Mac washing involves putting them up on a hoist and spraying the undercarraige for about 2 hours and then cleaning the mud and dirt from all over the inside of the truck.

It isn't glamorous but it is pretty mindless. PM me if you are interested.

If he wants to have little/no social life and be out of town a lot then I suggest trying the 'patch' out. Oil patch that is. I did that for about 2.5years, was a foreman at a safety company but got out because the president was a retard and I started to hate the hours/time away from home. But the money was great ($350+/day) for mindless work. They were ALWAYS screaming for more people.

Family friend currently is a head electrician on a huge plant going down in Fort Mac. He's gotten his son a job there doing instrumentation (another brainless job much like Safety) making $30/hr start, living in camp so 0 expenses. 10 days in, 4 out.

Something to consider if he wants good $$.

32188
so wat do you do in this job for 30/hr

C_CRX
the 30/hr is Instrumentation. It's actually a trade. I don't know much about the exact specifics tho. I'll ask him next time I see him and try to learn more about it other than 'a monkey could do it'.

I was told $16 for FT. I want to apply, just don't have the cash to take the course and join a gun club for my PAL.

Stupid military. 7 years in, expert marsksmen with rifle, pistol and shotgun, qualified in most light to medium weapons with famliarization on some heavy, marksmanship coach for 4 years, even taught weapons handling..........nothing to show for it in the civilian world.

On the subject of gun clubs, any recommendations? Wild West is too handgun/pistol oriented for me. I'm looking for something that I can get some rifle time with too. Ideally one involved with both rifle shooting competitions as well as combat pistol type stuff. I'd like to get back into that kind of stuff.

You certainly don't need to join a gun club to get your PAL. Wild West runs classes every Sunday to get both your restricted and unrestricted PAL.

Brinks full-time wage will be in the neighbourhood of $16.70. 18 bucks applies for the daytime commerical shifts, when you pick up at Safeways, IGAs, banks, etc... the 16.70 is for night-shift (wierd that they make less) servicing ATM units and night deposits in banks.

As for gun clubs, I don't know. Brink's uses both Phoenix Range on the Southside and the Spruce Grove gun club for practice. I've never been to Phoenix yet, but Spruce Grove has a rifle range as well as pistol and bow ranges and I've seen EPS and RCMP Officers out there with some pretty heavy machinery... AR15s, long rifles, etc.

Hope this helps.

I never looked at the forms, I was told you had to be member of a gun club to get a restricted PAL. That's good news. I know a guy who teaches the course for cheap, so that helps a lot.

flipincanadian
In the vaine of aquiring a PAL any one know who is doing challenge's, I dont need to take the course and im not sure who does challenges often. How is working in fort mac, Im thinking about doing that for a couple of months to pay off my car. Currently a 1st year apprentice welder but would consider other things, such as kal tire.

If you know where Pipestone Creek Archery is, you can walk in any time and challenge the tests there.

It certainly is.

But it's probably cheap, and that's why we use it.

I'd rather shoot outside anyways. I hate indoor ranges.

STiPWR
indoor blows.. I dont mind it for handguns though... I just found the range to be "old man" oriented hehe. It even smells like my grandma's house.

95EagleAWD
Even handguns are more fun outdoors.

No need for ear defenders.

Agreed. There's no challenge shooting in no wind with perfect visibility. Add in those other factors, like glare from the sun and a slight breeze, and it makes it all the more interesting.

Any monkey can hit center of mass with enough coaching in a perfect environment at long range. It takes a certain amount of skill to do the same thing in a drizzle, or a stiff, gusty wind.

EDIT:

STi, what about you? Got a recommendation for a range? Something with rifle and handgun, preferrably with some combat pistol stuff?

95EagleAWD
Actually, in June when I requaled on our .38s and 12 gauges, it was the first time I'd shot with Brinks in two years that it hadn't been cold and snowing.

I was working for almost 19 hours before I went and shot... but that's life, I guess.

Nothing like freezing your ass off, shivering and trying to fit frozen bullets into a scalding hot revolver cylinder. They' don't quite fit right.

dtjohnst: have you done anything to get your PAL yet?

Need a job first to pay for the course. On the upside, I start tomorrow with Beretta Security. Couple of weeks I should be right as rain. Takes about a month to get it after you send in the paperwork I hear, can you confirm? My buddy was a yank living here for a few years, took him 6 weeks, I figure it'll be quicker for me given how I had a top secret clearance up until 18 months ago and a secret up until 4 months ago.

EDIT: If you think that sucked, wait till your winter indoc with reserves. I once saw a man freeze his C7 to his cheek. lol Asshat should've listened when the M/Cpl told him his face was too far forward.

EDIT: I heard from a Brinks driver the other day that Securicor was a better place to work (better pay, more benefits, better hours, etc). Now given they took over Loomis, which I hear was one of the worst companies on the planet, I'm not sure if I should believe this guy. Comments?

95EagleAWD
Haha... from what I hear, Securicor is a joke. I'd never work there simply because their security sucks.

They've been robbed 3 times in two years here. We haven't been robbed in 22 years.

I'd stay away, but that's just what I've heard.

Most are 8, some (full time) are 10.

No 12s.

Of course, my 8 hour shift usually lasts 6 and a half to seven, but today it took almost 10. I was pretty much ready to kill my slow-ass driver today.

Damn. I gotta get in gear. Having a dog is nice, but 12 hour shifts are KILLER. 60 hours a week, the paycheque will be worth it. ;) But man am I exhausted. It'll be about 3 months before I finally get my PAL though. I assume you can't apply if you're waiting for it in the mail, huh? Gotta actually have it in hand? You got connections to put in a good word for me?

I saw Brinks the other day when I was working. If you ever see a Barretta wagon/suv driving around and you're in the downtown core, that's probably me.

By the way, do you guys buy your own vest, or is it issue? I'm thinking of getting a vest since I've already come across 3 knife-totting crazies in 6 days. A spike III, edged III protection vest isn't cheap though, and if you guys have to buy your own, I might just upgrade to a IIIA ballistic. Unless you'd recommend something higher, like a III or IV.

If you don't have your PAL, you can work at Brink's in an unarmed capacity... like in the vault. Just tell them it's coming from the government, and they'll let you work in the office.

As far as vests, Brinks will pay 50%, you pay the rest, because they're not considered mandatory. Upside is, you can keep it when you quit. Mine is a Level II ballistic protection, with no knife protection. I do wear a ceramic plate in the rear though. I figure anyone coming at me with an AR15 or AK47 is gonna just shoot me in the head/legs anyways, so ballistic protection against stuff like that is pretty useless.

Whenever I was at the range, I worked on my mozambique. No vest in the world will save you from that.

How long is the application process usually? Hand in the resume, interview within a week or so or do they take their time?

95EagleAWD
Yeah, probably withing a week or so for the interview.

My "interview" two years ago consisted of "when can you start"

It may be more indepth now, but I wouldn't be worried.

We're on 134 ave just west of St. Albert Trail. It's a brown building with iron bars on the windows... they won't let you in, but just ring the bell and the receptionist should open one door and take your stuff; bring your resume, driver's abstract and a photocopy of your PAL if you've got it already.

ChromeDragon
Man, $14 an hour to protect someone else's money? You'd figure these people would care more about their shit than that.

We don't protect it. We simply move it from place to place. The armour, trucks and guns are for our protection.

Yes, but there are full time postions open, and you can slide into them if no one else wants them, and it seems no one does.

dtjohnst
Cool. And I'm hoping experience helps. My CFSC is on Saturday, so I'll send off for my pal next week.

dtjohnst
Their website doesn't list starting pay for Vault Cashiers while I wait for my PAL. Any idea what it is?

95EagleAWD
Not a clue... I can ask tomorrow.

If I were to guess, it would simply be the part-time wage.
