88 rx7 engine sitting for a year - Click HERE for Original Thread

KamRx7
Hi All
I just bought an 88 rx7 with the engine blown. The guy was about to install a replacement engine but lost interest and had no time. Says it has a new rad and water pump. The only thing not reinstalled on the motor is the clutch.

My question is because of the long wait should I do something to the engine before I install it? Like put some auto trans oil in the combustion chambers. Or is there some way to tell when it’s out of the car that it’s a good motor?

Any words of wisdom?

Thanks

Put it on and fire it up. We did a klze swap on a 93 probe and it didnt take long to swap. It was a first time for all of us swapping an engine so my advice would be to just put it in.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Please wait for advice from one of the rotary gurus. 13B's aren't piston engines. You may have a carbon locked engine, and if you don't treat it properly, it will vomit apex seals.

Check Rx-7 club out for the best advice.

If the engine is out of the car, turn the engine over by hand (clockwise looking at the front of the engine). The engine should turn freely, if it doesn't you have problems...

If the engine turns over by hand you can look into the exhaust ports and examine to see if the apex seals are all still in place and ok. Some people reccomend to get some oil on the apex seal (through the exhaust port) and work it in and out (with your fingers) many times until the apex seal springs out freely. This helps to clear any carbon out that may be sticking the seal in one position.

If you have spark plugs in the engine you should be able to turn the engine over by hand and here the sound of each puff (compressed air escaping) out of the exhaust port.

I would reccomend getting some MMO (marvel mystery oil), can be found at Canadian tire... And putting some in each rotor housing and turning the engine over several times by hand.

If your engine check out ok make sure to do all the tune up items, new spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel filter, air filter etc etc.

Once the engine is running it wouldn't hurt to run some seafoam (found at napa) through in order to remove any carbon build ups.

Im sure I forgot a few other methods and items you can do to check your engine. Check out RX7club.com for endless amounts of information, many other people have been in the same situation before.

Good luck!

No-Pistons
you may also want to add a premix of oil gas into your gas tank also check you injectors to make sure there not stuck closed or open.

Ron@Revolution
I wouldn't want to be running oil through my injectors thats a sure fire way to gum them up.

DarrylBleau
I believe he's referring to two-stroke oil, not motor oil, which would be a bad idea.

Thanks for the advice everyone I'll let you know how it turns out.
