| chev sprint: engine swap options? - Click HERE for Original Thread |

My buddies' brother has asked me if i want to do an engine swap on his 4 door sprint (91 i think) automatic. His daughters had been driving it but the tranny is acting up and the motor is burning oil, so he bought another car and parked the sprint. He doesn't want to keep it a 3 cyl because it's not enough power to get 4 passengers through a left-turn in traffic very safely. He also doesn't want to trash it as is, because it could be a lot of fun, or at least worth something in running condition.
are there any 4 cylinder swaps that will go into this car without too much fabrication? something that I will find at Pick 'n' pull? |

| Some of the suzuki swifts did come with a 1.3L 4 cyl. You could always find one of those. That should drop in, someone correct me if i am wrong though. |

If you can get it the 1.3L DOHC from a swift GT or GTI(before VW had a cow) - only came with 5spd.
If yours is an ATX, the suzuki 4dr versions came with a 1.6L, a little more torque'y than the 1.3L, but don't rev as high.
I had a SOHC 1.3L in my Swift GS, it was good, I hauled alot of stuff around no prob.
Or, even the 3cyl(yeah I know) turbo from the sprints and fireflys.
All should "bolt" up, going to the 1.6L or the DOHC you might need to upgrade the front suspension. I asked around doing a swap from my 1.3L SOHC to the DOHC and I was told I needed to upgrade my suspension, but the 4dr is supposed to hold a little more wieght.... |

gimmie a PM or visit www.teamswift.net for MANY options... we even have a section for engine swaps.
but yeah, look for a GTi/Gt engine if possible.
It's 100% mortocycle engine... revs WELL into 9K with-out even sweating
They are rare, but OH SO worth it.
try to avoid the 1.6L, it's pretty weak, and very unreliable. |

SSGTI says they're a good swap for GT owners... depending on what your goals are..... |

hahaha. Question: Couldn't he swap the geo storm.
Do the DOHC from the early geo storms (1990-1992 it think) or the 1.8 it came with after. I don't know alot bout these cars but i think that these engines would be pretty fast in this car. The 1.8 fromt he 92+storm would be fast too.. or.. LS1. hahaha.. |

The Ecu's are interchangable... that part is easy.
Most people say you should transfer the entier harness.... but in my experience, it's unnecessary.
There are a few minor wires you need to extend or trim to get to different locations but all in all it's not too bad. |

no, entirely different design and mounting points and what not....
techincally speaking, i guess anything is possible, but i think he's looking for somthing that would involve a lot less fabrication...
Maybe something that would take a weekend and 2 flats of beer. |

^_^ precisely.
I didn't see too many swifts at Pick'n'pull or any other suzuki product, but there ARE some turbo G10 sprints. I'm leaning heavily in that direction currently.
I wonder how much boost those will take from say, a bigger turbocharger? I'm not afraid to fabricate or modify an exhaust manifold and downpipe, if I think it might be worth it.
... I'm also sitting on a (buick 3800) supercharger that I don't know what to do with. it has a built-in vacuum bypass ... |

boo-urns! all the turbo sprints at pick n pull are gonez0rs. there was a geo metro 4 door with a 4 cylinder motor in it... i wonder how big that one is?
one thing i noticed... all the sprints there have TBI. do the turbo ones have MPFI or are they throttle body too? |

The 4cyls where either 1.3L or 1.6L
the 4door hatches normallt had teh 1.6L, the 4dr sedans had the 1.3L... or at least based of my experiance. |

What about the guys dropping 350's in the little chevettes that normally came with 1.5L 4 bangers.... are tehy retarded too? Although they are starting with a car thats already a rwd. Or the guy that dropped a big block with I think a blower on it into a 2000+ cavalier?
It would be interesting to see an LS1 or LS7 in a Sprint... heh 1 run down the track would probably empty the fuel tank though. |

hay anyone seen or want to sell a turbo engine, or any part thereof having to do with the manifolds and wiring for this car? I'd even go with just the intake and fuel rail with harness so i can do an MPFI upgrade. I really dont' want to attempt trying to turbo the TBFI if I can avoid it.
some notes:
I just got an IHI VJ5 turbo in good condition I'd like to install. sure, it's big, but with the shushbox, lag won't be much of an issue.
I just did the compression on the motor... 170 PSI seems kind of high. better keep the boost down ;) |
