Hello,
I'm looking for some input from any law enforcement folks in regards to interpretation of part of the Vehicle Equipment Regulation under the Traffic Safety Act. Specifically, is it legal to run without side mirrors as long as you have a rear view mirror? The regulation below seems to imply that side view mirrors are only required by the legislation when the rear view mirror does not give a clear view behind the vehicle? Is this ture?
Rear view mirror
72(1) A motor vehicle must have a rear view mirror that gives the driver a clear view of the roadway behind the vehicle and of any other vehicle approaching from behind.
(2) If the view in the rear view mirror is obstructed or interfered with in any way, a motor vehicle must have side mirrors on each side that give the driver a clear view of the roadway behind and on each side of the motor vehicle. |

That's correct, side mirrors are only required if the rearview mirror is obstructed. But don't forget this:
quote: 69(2) A person shall not install, replace or cover the rear window glazing in a motor vehicle with a transparent, translucent or opaque material unless the motor vehicle has outside rear view mirrors on both the left and right that comply with section 72(2).
So if your rear window is tinted, you need side mirrors. |

Thanks!
I won't be tinting the back glass, so that will work out well. Good-bye side views when I do the body work on my car! |

If you are planning on doing this on the 924......... you are going to have 2 real nasty blind spots. |

| Very true, but my 924 sees very rare use, only in summer, and never in rush hour. |

| Whoa whoa whoa... I'm not home, so I can't pull up the quotes.. You need minimum of 2 mirrors, either both sides and no rearview, or 1 side and 1 rear view. |

You're going to have to pull up the quotes when you get home then. Nothing in the VER or TSA about it that I can find.
If you get in an accident, just tell the man your blindspots were OEM. OEM seems to be a popular excuse. |

| I've seen 2 Hiboys and 1 Lead Sled in the city with no sideviews, so the hot rodders seem to be getting away with it. |

Hmmm My bad.
The Alberta Regs don't stated it,
The federal regs(section 111 or something, so it wouldn't count anyhow) only mentions you need a side mirror if you have passangers in the back seat that block the view of your rear view...
Maybe it's the Onterio HTA I'm thinking of... |

Yeah but they get away with lotsa stuff, like no fenders/mudflaps.. etc, etc. |
