disabling an internal wastegate - Click HERE for Original Thread

newaccorddriver
is it possible to disable an internal wastegate by unhooking the vacuum line leading to it? i dont believe jeffs answer of welding it shut:p

Can't Stop Spin
you can... but it's usually not the safest of ideas. wga's are there for a reason...

why don't you just put a stiffer spring on the wga, therefore making it harder to open... but still allowing it to do it's job.

I guess you are going to an external gate.

Weld it, It is the only option. If you just unhook it it will leak like a SOAB and you will have very inconsistant boosting.

I welded mine, no problemo.

would putting a boost controller on it and turning it up to like 30 PSI do the trick? itll stay shut while the external wastegate is doing all the work

im not sure what the turbo runs stock, but i believe my tial has a 0.5bar spring. i just need to wait for it to come in to verify it

You can easily weld cast iron, it is just kinda messy.

Weld it. Otherwise the air pressure from the exhaust over the exhaust wheel will cause the wastegate to flap.

No matter what you do you will need to weld it shut or buy a different exhaust housing for your turbo.

would a block off plate do the trick?

Just pull off the wastegate actuator, attach a piece of threaded rod to the wastegate arm and then make a small bracket on the other end to attach the rod to. This will hold the wastegate door shut and if you ever want to go back to the internal you can.

Hey, ya that would work too. Then your not messin with the turbo. Put the wastegate on the manifold. Good idea.

actually, im putting the wastegate on an adapter piece between the manifold and the turbo itself something in the lines of this...

my manifold was made by somebody who obviously didnt do what i said when i said tilt it out by an inch, so im stuck using something like that, except im making my own. all i need is a welder(or find someone with one) and a reliable way of disabling the wastegate to no ill effects

bah just weld it.

Supra_devil
i made the piece Chromedragon suggested in a couple of minutes using spare pieces from around the garage. was easy.

i am willing to help out if you want, i'm only available evenings (after 7) and sundays though.

Just weld it shut or you will not have consistent boost like someone above said.

If you have the turbo Out of the car.. Just pop off the Downpipe.. and weld it..

Honestly.. Then you won't have any problems.. OR.. Get a Whole new Downpipe Made.. Which, you might have too because your turbo will now sit around 2"-3" Lower than 'Normal'.. And Just block off the wastegate hole and only expose the turbine exhaust outlet.

There Are ways around it.. But eather way.. you're going to HAVE to Weld something to get it done properly...

DO it RIGHT The FIRST Time!!!

Or just buy a proper turbo, of if your poor a proper exhaust housing.

There will be some turbulance from the welded wastegate that will make your turbine run less efficiently.

But it is doo-able
