I was goin to my friends house last week and i saw a nissan 240sx for sale, it has a dent in the back right fender. the guy sid that the car still runs,it is written off and it is worth the money. me, excited because i want to get my first prodject car but i was a little uneasy that the frame might be bent or it will be a waste of money.
would it be worth it to pay $1500 for the whole car or $500 for just the body??
the body(everything except the motor) has no seats, the dent, a front bodykit w/fog lights, comes with a spare tire and no exhaust
if i got the body should i get a SR20 or buy the car with the engine?? |

What do you mean by dent? Dent and written off sound like oxymorons...
If it's written off, I dont' think it's worth the hassel you'll have to go through if you're planning on putting it on the road as a daily driver?! At the same time if the damage isn't bad then it might not be a bad project.... keep in mind the "hidden" costs of repairing somebody elses "junk!" I would have the frame checked but it seems hard to do that unless you trailer it! Definatly check out what you ahve to do to recertify/ and the hassels of getting a "clean" title back on the car (and don't forget it may not be "written" off, but written off because damage exceeded value of purchasing another car of it's kind byt the insurance company! |

Get a copy of the appraisal that wrote it off - then you will be able to see WHY it was written off and what the insurance company estimates it would cost to fix it.
I've used writeoffs as my winter beaters for the past 3 years, never had a problem with any of them at all after I fixed them up (Both had frame damage - one was rolled).
And remember, within a month or so they are toughening the laws for writeoff inspections I think - making it really hard for old cars to pass. All those little things (Suspension, etc...) that cars that age need WILL need to be replaced. |

| Probally written off because of the cost of repair. I had a car written off just because of cosmetic damage. |

But you want to know WHAT needs to be repaired. The insurance company might say the frame was bent, or it needs all new suspension on the right side, etc....
If it's just a 'dent' in the quarter then there must be more to it, because they probably paid the guy $5000. And at worst case scenario, it wouldn't cost more than $1000 to weld a new quarter on. |
