how to hibernate your car - Click HERE for Original Thread

how do you properly park a car for winter? what things need to be done? or do u just park it? just curious thanx

92_WhItE_H23
depends on where its going to be... heated garage, garage, backyard, driveway, street etc... for our cars pretty much you dont need anything. just park it, if its outside might be good to buy a car cover for it.

And some fuel stablizer would be good too

2ndgenlude
just park it, pull the battery, throw it on some 2x4's (battery), if the car is outside tarp it/car cover, and thats it. fuel stabilizer isn't needed. gas takes 3+years to become unusable, but its extra insurance.

Just follow his advice if you want your car to rust out. If you dont want it to rust, park it. I've parked mine three winters in a row in edmonton, and I've never regretted it. It keeps the body in awesome shape. When I park it, I fill that tank, change the oil, and pull out the battery and put it on a block of wood. If you put it directly in cement somehow it drains the battery.

Park it, its a prelude, not a civic.

I dunno about you clowns (and I say that in the amicable way, not to be insulting), but I can't afford 2 cars.

fuel stabilizer is a good thing, and ensure you have an absolute full tank of gas for winter. Any excessive room in the tank can lead to condensation and corrosion in the tank. Your fuel pump and filter will thank you.

btw, my civic is getting parked! (it aint no prelude)

It's a civic that wishes it was a prelude Duane (j/k)

Like the previously people said, change the oil, fill the tank, add fuel stabilizer, either remove the battery or connect it to a trickle charger, clean the car inside and out, cover the car with a car cover or tarp.

Nis13
how about just drain the oil? fill it up again in spring?

Praylewd powr
This will be the first winter where a car cover is in order! The engine didn't blow up!

ha haa

lol,
anyone know a good place to store a car. pulling the motor, throwing it on a stand, and need a place to store the car over winter. cheap would be nice lol.

4thGenLude
would you guys suggest throwing it up on jack stands instead of leaving it on the wheels?

2ndgenlude
it won't sit long enough to be worried about flat spots. my car just sat for 2-3 months and its fine lol.

92_WhItE_H23
you dont even need fuel stabalizer... there are cars that sit in car lots that dont move longer then a year and they drive fine... maybe if ur in a 400whp beast or something tuned, your car will be fine as it is..

Praylewd powr
that reminds me. I still have a half bottle of fuel stabilizer from previous years (you don't use much).......but I forgot to add stabilizer to it. Can I still use it?

Bingo. Fuel Stabilizer is a must. There is achance that it may go bad on you, a chance it won't. It did on one of my cars and it was a PITA. For $5, it is worth the trouble.

You really don't need to take the battery out..... just disconnect (matter of preferance). They are right about putting it on cement though. If you put a charger on it, be sure not to leave it on (unless it has an auto shutoff at full charge). I just throw a charger on it for 12 hours before starting.

If you don't run your car at all in the winter, I would make sure that you squirt a couple tablespoons of oil in each cylinder (through spark plug hole) before you start it in the spring. Bump it a few times (disconnect ignition wire from coil) to get the pistons moving and lubed..... them start.

Changing your oil before helps avoid sludge & varnish sticking to your internals. Always a good idea. However some people will argue that oil separates after 6 months. On dino oil, I would do a change before and after since it is cheap and just keep the same filter. Now that I am on synthetic, I probably won't change it right away in the spring.

With your car sitting for 5 months, you can also get flat spots on your tires (but may not.... or may not notice them). Putting the car on stands isn't good for the suspension. I like to move the tire orientation by pushing the car a couple of feet every month. Make sure the tires don't go flat.

If your car is due for any fluid changes, now is the time. Dirty fluids can accumulate diposites and corrode while they sit.

Car cover (good investment).

Sorry for the ramble.....not trying to sound like a "knowitall". All the above is just my experience for winter storage..... you may not be as picky as me. I have been hibernating cars with my dad for 10+ years. For the past few, we have been putting 3 cars to bed...... it is getting a bit stupid now.
