From the Edmonton Journal:
Ticket scofflaws to lose tax refunds
Canada Revenue to withhold payments to motorists with overdue fines
The Alberta government is cracking down on traffic ticket scofflaws by hitting them where it hurts — snatching their income tax refunds and GST rebates.
Under the program, the Canada Revenue Agency will withhold those payments from motorists with overdue traffic fines and allow the provincial government to intercept the money as payment for the fines.
There are almost 600,000 overdue traffic fine tickets in Alberta, representing about $104 million in uncollected revenue.
Officials stressed Thursday the fine-recovery project is not intended as a cash-grab but a way to improve safety on the province’s roads.
“Traffic violation fines are intended to deter drivers from disobeying traffic laws and endangering the lives of other drivers, passengers and pedestrians,” said Justice Minister Ron Stevens. “This will help create more incentive for drivers to not commit traffic offences.”
The province already blocks drivers with unpaid tickets from registering vehicles or renewing their licences until they pay up.
The pilot project which started in Edmonton in the summer and spreads to the rest of the province in about a year.
Albertans who don’t pay their tickets will be sent a letter from the province asking for the money. If they don’t pay within 30 days, the debtor is registered with the federal taxman. Canada Revenue will send another letter warning of the refund and rebate interception. |

This affects people like a guy I know who hasn't paid his tickets iin about 6years...He doesn't have a car registered in his name, and well he didn't renew his license last time it came up for renewal.
I haven't spoken to him in about a year, so I dunno if he's still driving.
This would piss me off, I too just pay my fines come registration time, I know alot of people who do the same, they plan on it this way and use their GST cheques to buy food and clothes for their kids. I'm a little behind on my income tax anyhow though... |

| Also catches the type of people who maintain a postal address on the wrong side of Llyodminster and register their vehicles and driver's license in Sascratchurass while living and working here (which is also illegal, as you have six weeks upon moving to Alberta to register your vehicle and transfer your driver's license over). |
