| I learned in the Costco parking lot after they closed. I stalled at least a hundred times, but I finally got the hang of it. |

| Get in the car, with someone who knows, and rip around, that's how I learned. :dunno: |

You cant really read how to do it, you need to experience it in person. Its not as easy as reading and doing....
Learn on a shitty car or something. |

I've gotta agree with what's been said so far. You can't really learn this by reading about it.
That's not to say that you *shouldn't* read about it, but you should do the reading after an in-car lesson or two. That way it'll clear up some questions that are bouncing around the back of your head. About *why* you use the clutch, or why it sometimes won't go into gear, etc. |

| Uhh I learned on back roads one day, I taught my freind in the staples parking lot one night, now I let him drive my car for me whenever he asks. |

| You can read up on the basic principle so you know what your feet should be doing, but there is no way to explain the friction point of a clutch without feeling it. I taught my buddy in a parking lot, and since he read up on it like I did years ago I trusted him to give it a go, he did great. |

| When i first started... Of course i read how to do it, when i got into the car, i couldnt get it at all without some practice. I thought reading online was kind of useless and way better if someone teach you instead of reading the steps. |

| i stalled a good 15 times when i first learn at heritage in the evening. I swear i did some damage to the tranny, a few of the stalls were pretty bumpy. I would highly recommend getting someone to teach you and take you out to practice in a car you dont really care that much about. Im sort of jealous of my gf. i taught her how to drive standard and she only stalled twice :) maybe its just im such a good teacher  |

| I stopped on the side of 97th street at 2am, and told my wife to get in and drive. She cry'd the whole way home, but we got home, and she's awsome at driving standard now. |

Sorry, I was trying to find an article on how not to be an asshole on howstuffworks.com to point you towards, but apparently they don't have one. |

i agree. once you can start from a stop half decently, take the car for a drive late one night because that is the best way to learn. you won't have to worry about traffic and you can focus on the car.
if you are still having trouble starting from a stop, go to a large parking lot and practice starting in first until you get it. it will come eventually :D |

Thats basically what I did with my younger brother who was 12 at the time, except I was yelling at him and made him cry.
As for learning standard, like everyone says just get in and drive, you don't need anyone to teach you.
When I got my first vehicle, I have driven standard once before for like 10 minutes.
I had to drive my car home from the southside to the northeast by myself.
I managed to do it on my own, but to say the least it was interesting. |

Anything you learn on the internet is nill compared to the lesson you should be having behind the wheel. ;)
My best advice is if your teacher has you chirping tires and grinding gears, find another teacher. |

When i got my first car, i had never driven standard before...
Just drove around town at about 11pm with my dad, stalled maybe 5-6 times, you get the hang of it pretty quickly. |

Big parking lots! Get used to feeling the clutch and RPM, then practice with shifting.!
I taught my self on my olf 1986 Mustang SVO, then decided my real test was to drive it in San Francisco! Not too long after, I made it up to Lombard street and down safely.!
Poor clutch, but yeah, practise makes perfect. |
