Rear shock removal - Click HERE for Original Thread

Is a Mazda-specific tool required to remove the rear shock from its mount? More specifically, how do I get this stubborn centre bolt undone?

We jury-rigged a device and got through one side, but the other's being stubborn and no amount of torque and lube seem to be able to move it. There's too much rubber around for fire, methinks. The tool I borrowed from Partsouce doesn't seem to fit (4 little studs around the bolt instead of 2), so does anybody know the way to do this or have the tool? I don't wanna tool around on 3 AGXs and one stock strut until Tuesday... Thanks.

It looks like to me you just need to use a spring compressor to compress the spring, and then use a impact wrench to pop that top bolt off...

The problem is that the top bolt is connected to the centre shaft of the shock. So, the whole centre of the shock, the bolt and the rubber thing it's surrounded by rotate as one piece. This stops us from being able to exert the neccessary torque on that damn bolt. We've tried to lock it all down (vice grips, screwdrivers/pry bar in the brace holes), but it either rotates anyways or we're simply unable to exert enough force...

now
when you use an impact it will hammer it off.
you will have to hold the impack back by hand enough
to make it hammer and to keep it from spinning free
it will hammer it off.
be sure to have a spring compressor on it before removing it
or you may end up with a spring flying across the room.

You will only ever make that mistake once:lol:

You can usually crack the bolt loose with a rachet+socket before you compress the spring. Then you compress the spring and the pressure you can apply with your fingers should hold the shock piston well enough to loosen it off further;)

Also cnd tire rents manual coil spring comressors for free.

Success! :D ...Must enjoy responsibly...
