| Hi, I have a Class 5 BC driver's license, however, I am in Edmonton for schooling. I have talked with some BC law enforcements that have told me that if caught speeding, I do not get demerits, but still have to pay the fine. I've been reading of a mandatory court appearance if caught 50km/h + over the speed limit. Would this apply to me as well? (I don't plan on doing it, its more of a matter of curiosity)Thanks. |

If you didn't pay a ticket, or miss a court date, there will be a summons for your arrest, and if you're caught in Alberta after that, you'll be off in cuffs to a holding cell and court.
BC and Alberta do not (currently) share demerit information...so ICBC won't know of what you did. Think of Alberta like a huge version of Las Vegas....which it is to you B.C. Fruits. :D |

| Ok, but what would happen to me when I showed up in court? Could the judge merely give me a slap on the wrist with a fine, or could he/she take my license away? Thanks. |

As they'll have no jurisdiction over your license, you'll probably get a very hefty fine...and a prohibition from driving in Alberta...but your BC license may be ok...depends...they may confiscate it and then you'd have to tell BC what happened to get a new one.
Just don't speed...it's that simple.

Bear in mind as well that if you're here for 3 months or longer, you'll have to change everything over. I initially came here for school, and everyone I spoke to said the same thing: once 3 months is up, everything MUST be converted to AB. |

I think there is an exception for students though...I think. I know Ontario has this exception (from experience) but I'm not familiar with the other provinces. |

Nope. I asked them that, seeing as how I was a student, and everyone from police to government to registry to insurance said no. In fact, my school was not only a recognized training institution, but the length of training was unknown. Might've been 4 months, might've been 2 years, everyone said it didn't matter, even university kids were legally required to change it all over. |
