My monitor exploded - Click HERE for Original Thread

Driven
heh.. i have no idea why.. but it just shut off and made some clicking noises and now.. won't turn on anymore. It's a 19 inch crt monitor.. is this thing done? Or maybe it needs something small to get it working? I'm not a scientist at computers so if it can't be fixed.. can someone tell me the differences between lcd monitors.

thanks.

SilverNeonRacer
for the most part it's dead.

there's like a 5% chance it's the fuse.

For you to bring it somewhere to be diagnosed and then fixed, it's probably cheaper to buy a new one.

Now differences between LCD's. "Normally" the higher the contrast ratio, and the higher the brightness mcd the better, and the smaller the refresh rate(16, 8, 5, 4, 2ms) the better.

I'm picking up an LG tomorrow 2000:1 contrast ratio, can't remember the brightness, and 5ms refresh. It's also a 19" wide screen that does 1440 by 900 resolution.

Thats the thin you gotta watch with LCD's is the resolution, they have a "native resolution" that you can't go past properly, and if you go under it looks like crap, some times you can make it look "better" but still.

A decent LCD 19" can be had for $230-$400.

Driven
Ah damn.. technology! Which one are you picking up and where and how much?

TrevorK
Whatever you do, don't take it apart if you don't know what you're doing as there are parts inside that can kill you.

BAh I take them apart all the time. Off topic but this is what I did to one:
http://www.fragapalooza.com/gallery2/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=2300&g2_serialNumber=2

I origianlly shove my drill in the top grounding port of the tube and let her rip to de-pressurize it, then I tried to shop the front glass off(I wanted to use the actual tube glass rather than plexi for that mod.

* not to say they aren't dangerious, but....

Just call a day or two in advance, ask for Thomas, tell him what you want, when you want to pickit up, say Heath told you to call and he should have one for ya.

I shold add you need to add GST and the ADS fee to that..

Any more info on this "native resolution" ?

What do you want to know?

Like ont he second LCD I posted it says this:
1280x1024 Resolution
which is it's native resolution, thats the resolution it produces the best quality picture at, and also the maximum resolution.

Unlike a crt monitor which has the cathode ray tube projecting hte image on the front of the screen, an LCD actually has proper pixels, in this example 1280 across and 1024. Now if you wanted to run say 640 by 512 resolution, the monitor stretches what would normaly fit on onw pixel across 4 pixels, prolly doesn't look too bad, but when it looks like crap is when you run a resolution where a pixel on the screen is split or shared between 2 pixels the computer sends out.

Older LCD's if you lowered the resolution you lost viewable area, like i would would only use 640 pixels wide and you'd have a black boarder around the outside.

Do you know what resolution you where running before your monitor went poof?

Another thing with LCD's is your viewable area is bigger than compared to a crt monitor. example 17" CRT corner to corner diagonally you actually have 15.8" where as with an lcd it's 16.8" or an actual 17"

indeed that one is nice.. but is it worth the extra money over that 203wtx?

SilverNeonRacer
Well I can barely tellt he difference between my wife's acer 19" wide which is a 500:1 contrast ratio and the L194WTX
which is the 2000:1 contrast ratio, obviously it is better, maybe not noticly better.

With the L194WTX my wife had to tweak settings to get it to display good, like contrast, gamma, color hue, etc, etc but now thats it's tweaked it looks good.

Driven
Prolly gonna get the 203wtx then. Thanks

Driven
Very pleased with my purchase.. thanks for all the help.

lcd's are way easier on the eyes
