no booting action computer just shuts off - Click HERE for Original Thread

mobo: dfi lanparty nf3
cpu: amd 3200+ new castle 64bit s754
ram: muskin redline 2x512
hd: 3x250gb sata 2, in raid0
psu: mgm 420watt
gpu: ati radion 9600 se

over clocked to 2.45ghz@258fsb

now this computer I was just surfing ebay. It completely shut off with no warnings or anything. When I try to restart it there is no response other then turning on couple of seconds and then shutting off. When I get it to turn on long enough bios doesn't load. I've replaced the psu with a 380 and a 500watt with no luck. Took it to a computer shop, the techie swapped the psu, also to have the same problem (turns on everything runs secondary ides, cpu fan etc.) some how it managed to load into windows, and then when he tried to shut it down it crashed. When I got home, I took everything apart and just plugged in the basics, psu, fan, mobo, gpu and turned it on no bios!. I have concluded that its either the mobo or the processor or something software related that I have no clue how to fix. But it can't be processor a small over clock like that shouldn't shorten the life span of a brand new processor to <6 months. on top of that im using a thermalright xp90c heatsink with a tornado fan and arctic silver 5 thermal paste. Any help would be appreciated!!

might be sol on the cpu... i've never seen a mobo fail like that. there's just nothing else it could be. you tried re-seating the cpu in the socket? do they still frown upon aftermarket thermal paste?

SilverNeonRacer
I see boards blow like that all the time :P Just replaced 2, one OEM Asus board in a E-machine and an Intel board.

Yes Intel and AMD still get cranky if you're not using their hsf and thermal sticker. Or atleast their documentation states so... not sure if they are actually that finiky though.

Kiddo
so i need a new board huh? no way I can fix the existing one?

SilverNeonRacer
Depends, if you can get it to let you flashthe bios it might help, but if it craps during mid flash, it's completely hooped.

Look for buldging capacitors, any sorta heat damage on the resistors and such, try new ram...

Normally an issue like this...it's cheaper to replace the board than diagnose the exact cause. 15years ago would be better to fix it, now, not, I meant hat board is maybe a $200 board, maybe $250 tops(I haven't looked) to diagnose it your looking $80-$120, then whatever parts and time to fix... I mean when I worked for HP they never fixed boards, they junked them and made new ones.

You can try a new cpu, but CPU normally doesn't cause shut down issues, or BIOS issues.

haha I'm just worried if buya new board and I find out its not the board and then go and get a cpu thats just a waste of money cause its a socket 754 but I really dont want to build a new comp until the D10 stuff comes out. For me to replace mobo I'd prolly jsut grap the cheapest one out there until April or March of next year so it wouldn't cost to much like 90 bucks or so

SilverNeonRacer
Yeah that'll work, you can get a socket 754 board with onboard video/sound 1 agp slot, 3 pci slots for about $70 - oh only 2 ram slots though.

If you do need new cpu too, I think you can get a 2800+ for about $75ish

Mobius
I have that exact MB just sitting around here. I'm pretty sure it worked when I took it out. If it works I'll take $50 for it, if not I'll take it back.

Kiddo
you have it up for grabs? i dont mind testing to see if it works and if it does i'll take it

Mobius
Yeh you can have it to test it. Pm me for my number.

I know this is a long shot, but this exact same thing happened to one of my friends. It turned out that for like 3 months the computer ran fine, then suddenly poof it just didnt want to boot. We took it apart and what it turned out to be was that when he installed his MOBO, he accidently put in an extra peg to prop it up and it was essentially short circuiting his shit. We took it out, installed the MOBO correctly following the slots and it worked first boot. The only thing we could never figure out was how it just suddenly made contact after 3 months.

There is a protective coating over the circuits, with the vibrations of the cooling fans eventually wore through the coating and shorted it out.

Dust is also a common cause for computers going "poof" because it can also cause shorts.

Makes perfect sense to me. He has 4 fans running so it's totally possible.
