Audio advice. - Click HERE for Original Thread

~30oZ~
I was just wondering how many of you have changed out all the speakers in your Z32's. I was thinking of picking up the front non-bose speaker brackets for the front from COZ, Did any of you go with those brackets? I was reading that the back non Bose speaker brackets are crap because they aren't a closed inclosure. So I guess I'll get someone to cut out some new tops for the top of the back speakers. I also need to get my deck installed (and the speakers) so I want to take my car to shop that has worked on the audio of a Z32 with the bose system before, any suggestions? I need a shop that does very good quality installs and work.

Thanks Guys.

~30oZ~
Also what kind of speakers are you guys using now? Do they fit well? I also read that running the speakers of the deck doesn't sound good?:dunno: What setup are you using?

Inzane
The Z32 2-seater doesn't really NEED rear speakers.

I run aftermarket separates up front, in a custom mount in the door, no rears, and a 10" sub. Two amps, one drives the fronts and one drives the sub. (I still have my oem rear speakers in place, which I can switch ON with a toggle and run off deck power, but I never do because its not needed).

Every car audio guru/installer worth their gold will tell you that the sound stage should be in FRONT of you, not behind you. (DVD-audio *surround* setups notwithstanding).

But do whatever you like.

Thanks for the help Jay, Anyone know of any shops that do quality jobs?

DIY,

You get to know how your interior is put together, make sure nothing is butchered or covered up, and can upgrade as needed.

I re-used the Bose enclosures on both my old NA and current TT and retro-fitted the new speakers. I haven't any experience with the Courtesy Nissan brackets, but the advise of my audio tech buddy is that sealed enclosures > open ones. No complaints here :D

As for the rear speakers, they actually fill out the coupe cabin soundstage nicely. A decent set of component speakers in the rear with the fader biased towards the fronts allows power when you turn it up with the t-tops out and clarity when you have the tops in and the volume down. I definitely miss them when in the convertible with only the front speakers.

I would avoid running speakers through the HU amp, most manufacturers overrate their built-in amp ratings, citing peak power rather than RMS. For example, a typical 200W HU is actually pushing ~ 20-25W RMS per channel. It usually translates to crappy loud sound through aftermarket speakers that are actually _underpowered_ by the HU amp. This is what happened to me when I installed my Pioneer HU with Infinity speakers, I couldn't figure out why things sounded so tinny when the volume was turned up. Add a decent amp to the equation, and suddenly your expensive speakers come alive.

All this from messing with a few Z32s and stereos, take it for what it's worth.

The tinny sound is clipping. Basically, when you crank up the volume the amplifier inside of many head units (and some separate amps) cannot keep up with what the speaker wants for power. This can lead to damage of the voice coils of the speaker and fry the amp.

I eventually want to do a nice stereo system in my Z. However, I can't justify doing this until the Bose system craps out on me.

BTW, Edwin, are you sure you should be doing your stereo right now? The money might be better used in other areas...

Hmm... perhaps I'll have to check out your system sometime and re-consider that.

And you went components in the rear... interesting. When I had my system done (~8 years ago now) my understanding was that using components in the rear would really draw the ear to the rear (since the tweeter frequency range is very directional)...

But I'd have to make some changes to try what you're suggesting. I'm currently running two 2-channel amps, so I'd need a 4-channel amp to have fader control.

Hehe... perhaps my priorities were mixed up but back when I first got my Z ('98) a stereo *system* was the FIRST thing I did. The crappy OEM Blose system just had to go! (even though it worked perfectly... nothing wrong with it) I didn't start with performance mods until '99.

Good point.

I won't be doing any Audio stuff till spring next year any how, but If I do come across I great deal during the sales around Christmas and such I want to know what to pick up, my Bose system has crapped out pretty much and I already have a head unit waiting to be put in but when I do put it in I want to do all of it at one time. I just spent $450 on Super Split downpipes so I don't have much cash left only enough to pay Nissan for the repairs.

Well if Jay's old bose was working fine, maybe he might be willing to part ways with it. That way you might be able to keep your stock system in operation for a bit longer.

'05 and early '06 was about repairs and getting the car in good to excellent running order.

mid to late '06 was all about performance mods. Some more hopefully this upcoming year too. Then, I'll just drive and wait for something to fail before I do major mods - turbos, motor build, etc. etc.

The beauty of buying a then 5-year old car is I didn't have to worry about that phase. I was "good to go", pretty much until it was time for the ~60k mile service.

I just thoroughly enjoyed a totally stock TT for the first year, with no mods and no problems.

~30oZ~
by any chance does anyone know the mounting depth of the stock front bose speakers?...I'm guessing this is going to limit the speakers I can buy:dunno:

~30oZ~
So what size/shape of speakers can I go with in the rear? could I go with a circular 6 1/2" 2-Way Speaker for the rear just like the front? What should I go with in the rear?:dunno:

The rear speakers in your '93 should be 4X6. Pretty easy to check, open your hatch and slide the rear speaker grille off (push it inwards). You have a couple of options.

1) replace with aftermarket 4X6 speakers. You can use the Courtesy Nissan brackets or re-use the stock enclosures. You may have to mod the stock enclosures a bit depending on the speaker.

2) replace with 6.5" aftermarket speakers. You will have to make brackets to fit or find a set of '90 speaker enclosures (tt.net classifieds).

I have the '90 enclosures (the only year that used the larger rear speaker and fit my 6.5" Infinity speakers in like so:

~30oZ~
cool, thanks for the help Rob. I will also be getting the 6.5" Infinity speakers that you have...do you find any rubbing of the speaker when the bose cover is put back on?

Replying to this kinda late maybe but here it is:
I immediately junked the Bose crap in my '90 300zx and had A&B Sound replace the front door speakers with JL 6 inch and the rear post 4x6's with Pioneer 4 inchers. Crappy service led me to try Certified Radio on Whyte Ave. These guys were great and already have done several shows with them. They installed the custom amp rack and sub as well as the deck. This was about 3 years ago and have had great service with these guys. Now that my '94 300zx convertible is on the road I will be going back to them for an install. Ask for Clarence. Just a suggestion. Good luck!
