Ok, comparing both... Im currently running the Shaw Extreme internet/cable bundle... its coming to almost 100 bucks a month.
My wife is trying to convince me to go with telus... Connection is slower but ALOT cheaper... plus they offer cable now aswell.
I personally Hate TELUS with a passion, since they have been fucking everyone over for years because there is no competition.
Lets hear some feedback on your experiences with your ISP or comparisons. |

I switched from Shaw to Telus, because it became cheaper.
I was on the basic whatever speed shaw thing. The one for 42 bucks a month.
Some telus guy came to my door and told me it would be cheaper through them, and that if I was a student it would be only like 25 bucks a month.
So I went with telus.
He told me, once im done school to keep telling them I am a student or there is a student in the household, and it will remain cheap.
The main reason I switched also is they give you a free wireless modem, which I use for my laptop. |

| I hate telus and their service. When shaw is available in my new housing area I will not look at telus again. Slow speeds and crappy service, they annoy me. |

After the shitty service Telus gave me when I moved into my new building, I'll never deal with them again. Shaws customer service and quality of service can't be touched by Telus.
Also, realize that going to Telus internet after using Shaw extreme is like trading your STi for a Pinto. I have true 1 MB/s downloads off of shaw, and the best I ever saw from Telus (and I had a commercial server package) was 260 KB/s.
Just save yourself the grief and stay with Shaw. |

My house is 100% Shaw free as a result. Phone & Internet with Telus, TV with Bell ExpressVu.

Sorry, I meant megaBYTES. I guess I should say I get 9000 megabits/s. I used to be a big fan of DSL, but shaw, and cable broadband in general has really gotten its crap together, and I don't think I'll ever go back.
P.S. My apartment has the Telus TV jacks already installed, and I was going to use that, but as I said, their service is horrible. I called Shaw, and had everything installed and ready to go the next day, Telus gave me ecuse after excuse about why I couldn't even get a PHONE working. |

Wait, I'm on crack. I actually get 9000 kbit/s (~1000 kbytes/s) Wrong terminology. It's faster than DSL, anyways. I want to know from all of the Shaw haters, how long ago has it been since you used them. They have massively upgraded everything, including their customer service.
My beef with Telus is that I scheduled a install for Phone/Internet/TV in June for a August 1st install, and they couldn't even call me to tell me that they needed to cancel the appointment because they didn't have enough lines to the building. I missed a day of work ($500 out of my pocket) and then got the runaround for 3 weeks. That's when I called Shaw, and I was hooked up the next morning. |

I like my telus because even going over the limit 10x they dont seem to care and never have:dunno:
For the last 4 years i have soared over the limits they give me on every plan i have had:)
That and shaw hates torrent users so i hate them but their extreme would be nice and is cheap. |

I was with Shaw about 6 or 7 years ago. Switched to Telus and when I move into my new house in a month I'll be going back to Shaw. I'm sick of Telus and their inconsistent, shitty connections and terrible service. I switched my cellphone to Bell last year and have never had to deal with any of the crap that was a regular occurence with Telus over the five years I had a cell with them.
Never again. |

I have Telus right now mainly cause well they're the only provider here.
When I was in the city, I had a Telus server plan with 40GB traffic a month, we routinly hit well over 120GB a month, not a peep from Telus. I have freinds on shaw they're always getting calls about going over the limit.
I switched to shaw because I moved my server to a co-locate, my Bro inlaw was living with us. On shaw he was getting more lag in his games than when he lived with his folks on 28.8. Download speed was insain 8Mbit, but upload was capped reallly low. I called the support line complain of the problems, they send a tech out, I tellt he tech the issues, they say it's that way by design, and to call the support people back, the onsite guys never did anything, the phone guys kept telling me "oh it shouldn't be that way it should be faster" the onsite guys say "yup thats normal, and that 80% of their users are kazaa users and thats why it's capped" I went through 5 on site guys in a week, never got anywhere so I went back tot Telus. I currently have 2.5Mbit down 1Mbit up, still go over my 70GB a month limit and not a peep.
I should add I'm not a telus Fan, I don't like their service either, I switched from one plan to another, the computer flipped it automatically at night, the guy didn't get around to the actual switch work til 3 days later. I called every 8 hours ont he nose for those 3 days saying my internet was down, business plan so they garentee satisfaction.
Telus I find is the lesser of the two evils. My family has nothing but hard times with Shaw too. My sister had digital cable, the reciever was busted or something, she put a ticket in.. tshe called every week a guy never did show up and they tried to bill her for a service she never got to use. She never got it worked out, they wouldn't budge, so she told them to shove it, just never paid it. She did pay for what she used though.. basic cable. |

It realy comes down to the area you live in, becaue some areas in this city are great for shaw and teriablle for telus , and then the reverse in others.
Best bet would be to ask your neighboors, if there likeing it then migth as well switch, but if they have problems then stick with shaw. |

I lived near down town, 5 blocks awat from a telus switch center and 8 blocks away from a shaw switch center(well it was "owned" by a different company, but almost all of shaws lines for the area ran through it. |

I've used both Shaw and Telus for home users, office users, etc, etc....
My experience is that for the average user either would be more than adaquate. Yes, Shaw will theoretically reach higher speeds but most people don't use / care for that sort of thing. When your internet experience consists of downloading music, checking the movie listings, and surfing message forums you won't notice a problem with either.
I personally use Shaw, but I don't pay the bill so it really doesn't matter. If it was my money, I'd go for the cheaper solution (Telus) because I'm not a picky user. If I need a movie downloaded, I have several fibre connections available to do so.
As well, if I were to download a movie at home, it wouldn't take significantly longer. Using typical torrent sites I reach speeds of 70-100K/second downloading TV shows weekly, which does not reach anywhere near the maximum speed offered by Shaw or Telus. Yes, there are faster ways to download but this sort of downloading is for the typical user (So no newsgroups, etc...). And for the typical user, either is fine (Provided there are no inherit issues with the provider in your area). |

| Iv been using Telus DSL for some time now and never had problems with it. My connection is pretty fast as well and rarely goes down and i dont have much to say about shaw never used them. But telus has been good for me they even gave us a new router for free because when we first signed up they gave us one. But it crapped out and they came the next day to replace it badaboom! |

I just asked a couple of the hardcore gamers here at work, they report that their "ping times" ( I assume that'll mean something to you being a gamer ) are 20-30% less than most people playing, and that they have no problems with Telus whatsoever.
FYI: Telus should also have a faster connection to, to compete with the Shaw Xtreme. |

On Telus out int he sticks my wife's ping times to servers in chicago are mid to low 30's occationally spike to 80's... if I get the torrents going full out her pings max out at like 700 hehe |

I'm using Shaw's High-Speed, and it's plenty fast. My sister has the High-Speed Extreme and it is faster, but regular high-speed is good for lots and costs ~$10 less than Extreme. I download a lot of big torrents and used to play online in BF2.
Then there's always the sweet High-Speed Nitro offered by Shaw for $100/month... but that's just overkill.
I used to have high-speed Lite (aka SLOW), that sucked. But that was still better than when I used to use Telus.
Shaw's customer service hails supreme in comparison to Telus'. Just call up Shaw and talk with them about what bundles they offer or deals they may have on.

telus tv. bad idea :p
it goes there inet. this means you can have a max of 2 tvs and in hight peak times it could take aslong as 5sec to buffer the tv station.
as for telus internet. the fastest you can get is up to 6mb. thats like 45 bucks amonth on a 3 year.
i work for shaw. i am installer tech. so i see alot of people switch over to our services.
shaw inet fastest is 25mb. yes 25mb. shaw nitro inet is coming out soon.
next step down xtreme-i is 10mb. this was just upped from 8 about 2months ago. 48 bucks a month. no contract.
and there high speed is 5 or 6. i cant remember. 38bucks a month
all of these can be a bit cheaper if yo have tv threw us aswell.
i dont want to come across as selling shaw. and being pro shaw cause i work for them.
i have had the telus inet is the pass when i lived off whyte. yea pings were good for games. but doing any kinda large files suck. |
|
|
| SilverNeonRacer |
Yeah, my wife can play 6 games at once without issue and stream music, but as soon as I start to stream a higher quality video or turn on bit torrent at anything above a 50-60KB download limit it lags her games, if if she's only playing 1.
25Mb... (Insert Drool emot here) Ok, thats the download, but whats the upload? It sure isn't full duplex. Like I said before I had shaw, 8Mb down from shaws test server, 6Mb real life with windows updates and other things... but the upload was capped at 256kb. |
|
|

| xtreme and nitro have a cap of 1mb. for upload. |

at year 1997, I use shaw.
at year 1999, changed to telus
at year 2001, changed to Interbaun
at year 2006, change to shaw.
and year 2007, change to 3web.
3web is cheaper, their customer services is shitty, but since they piggy ride on shaw, and they dun have a limit, it is all good.
my friend is using 3 web and he convince me me switch from the dreadful 1.5Mbits of narror band ADSL
or the ture board band xtreme.
go get3web.com to see for yourself. |

I have Telus tv and I like it... the actual TV service itself is very good, we run two tvs and its never taken over a second to buffer when changing channels. The channels themselves are good as well, just like having satellite. It also shows who is calling when you watch TV right on the screen.
I don't know the average internet speed but to download a 700mb movie on a torrent it takes around an hour. Not sure about internet gaming either, i've never tried it. |

I've had the opportunity to deal with them all since I've been working in IT for quite awhile. Good and bad to all of them - Shaw, Telus, Interbaun, Terago, etc. Only highlights worth mentioning are 30-60min waits on the helpdesk with Shaw for connectivity issues, similar responses with Telus. I have a business plan with Interbaun at home with a business package and I've only had to phone them once when I was moving, other than that 99.9% uptime and reliability.
And for those who dont know who Interbaun is, they offer home/business DSL and other services on top of Telus's lines. |

I used shaw back in... 1998 when it first came out, service was shit as it was overused by everyone cause u could hack their modems..
service was shit and always cut out...
switched to telus in 2000, speeds were garbage... but service was really reliable never died out like shaw..
2002 telus became crap for some reason and cutout often...
switched to shaw in 2003 and have been with them ever since,
speeds of 9mbps and 1mbps up I love I used to hate it cause they had a retarded bandwidth limit of 10gbs a month, which is now changed to 100gbs and they dont say anything if ur up in the 150 range... which is easy to do with shaw.
Shaw never cuts out on me anymore... I had to call once and it was fixed in 10 minutes, and one day my voip messed up and they sent someone to fix it the next day. |

I'd like to weigh in on this one....
I've used both Telus and Shaw throught the last ten years. Shaw used to suck really hard when it was Videon and when it transfered over. I switched to Telus because of that. I switched back to Shaw, when the offered the eXtreme package.
I choose Shaw hands down over Telus. Why?
- Shaw has excellent customer support
- Shaw does not 'go down' every week
- Shaw gets me 1200kB/s down and 150Kb/s up
- Shaw gets me low ping times to local servers (as long as they arn't telus) of <25ms
- I don't have to 'register' each MAC address on Shaw
- Shaw gives me 2 IPs
There are downsides to Shaw;
- Shaw caps bittorrent protocol speed. You'll need to get a client that supports portocol encryption to speed up the downloads, like BitComet.
- Shaw has issues with my router because of DoS attacks. Since Shaw doesn't filter their connection very much, a lot of crap hits the router and sometimes bogs down the stability of the connection. Often I find I have to reset my router to make things work.
Why I didn't like Telus:
- service was down every few days for long intervals
- much slower download, upload was very unstable (high packet loss)
- i just hate telus.
That's my opinion on this. |

They don't like it, and if you do it they'll likely cancel your service and charge you exhorbitant fees for having violated TOS. I used to be a supervisor for Comcast and that's what we did. You were literally black listed and would never be allowed to have comcast again, which sucked for one guy where Comcast was the ONLY internet provider in his area. |
|
|
| ChromeDragon |
This right here is why I hate Telus so intensely. Every few weeks I get a night where my transfer speeds are envious of 2,800 baud modems.

That's right. 9kbps download, 28kbps upload. WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT? |

You running a router? If so try rebooting it. If it's still doing that you could have a line issue that's causing it to. When it's acting slow call the helpdesk next time they can do further trouble shooting with you. |

I am now on Shaw digital TV, high speed net and phone and I'm never going back. There was an issue with the phone on the first day, but it was cleared up within two hours and hasn't come back since.
On wireless I'm actually running about 5 times faster than Telus ever did. |

Yeah I've always had Shaw...here's my reasons why:
-Shaw is faster
-when our modem got bogged down, we brought it in, and they gave us a new one, no questions asked.
-my friends have recieved the same service
-by saying "yeah" and "uh huh" to some douche over the phone we magically got signed up for Telus internet, who shipped us a modem from Vancouver, and started to charge us for it
The only "good" Telus internet package is the one my dad's got at work, which costs the company $10k/month. I cannot afford $10k/month internet. If you can, go for it.
And on top of that, do you really want internet from a company that has become so deperate for users they're giving you a free computer or $400 off something at the store if you sign up? |
|
|
| SilverNeonRacer |
| Heh I want that $400 computer or gift cert :P I'm with Telus and have no choice, ok I do, Telus or no internet. But I have a bussiness plan, and the residential plans are better than the business plans. |
|

I'll put my two cents into this as well. I used to work for Telus from 1997 to 2001. I had my cell phone, my internet (when first came out), and phone line through Telus. Nearing the end of 2001 i was moving into our new house for 6 months Telus screwed me over with a phone line. They kept making promises stating that the phone line will be installed. We had to wait nearly 6 months while everyone else on the block had their phone lines installed. I kept calling them numerous times. Finally i decided to give one of my friends a call in the office and talked to the residential managers. Literally 48 hours later i magically had a phone line in my house.
I paid my cell phone bill which was maxed out every month and switched to Fido. Went to Shaw residential phone plan as well when it came out. I've told myself that I will never go to Telus. As for their Internet service/support. It depends, there are some good agents at Telus who knows their stuff but I have to admit its more consistant with Shaw whom I've been with since 2002. Their wait times are not that long and they go above and beyond with regards to retaining customers and keeping them happy. Comparing average download speeds Shaw's is a bit better but not by much. |

Yeah it was kinda stupid, since it was under my moms name at the time and I Know I don't sound like a girl. I mean c'mon they've gotta require some sort of verification do to that, otherwise if they call and the dog knocks the phone off the hook then you've magically signed up too!
They must be getting desperate.

Depends on your neighbourhood. Shaw is a shared connection so if you live by lots of people who also have service through them it will be slower during 'peak' times.
TELUS typically has more consistant speeds with better 'ping' times.
TELUS can be much cheaper if you go with the light package but it is quite a bit slower. THey are giving away free systems right now if you sign a contract. |

Double the cost gets you 2.5x the downstreams. Upstream remains the same. Bandwidth increased from 100GB to 150GB per month, however when you shell out $100/month for internet, I highly doubt they're going to harass you for downloading too much.
I never watch TV, so I cancelled my TV and used the extra money to upgrade my internet. |
