well i got my first speeding ticket last night. i was doing 112km/h in a 70km/h zone. im a gdl driver and im just wondering if anyone has any advice on how to deal with this, what kind of punishment (suspension, demerits etc.) i will be facing and anything else i should keep in mind. also, will i be able to drive between today and my court date? any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know how you feel. I got a stunting ticket when we first got this snow. I was showing a buddy how good I could drift and I slid into curb and got stuck. Of course the car behind me had to be a cop.

So I got a ticket and I had to get pulled out by a friends truck. That sucked. It was slippery!

My opinion is that if you were speeding, then you should accept responsibility for the ticket, pay the fine and take the punishment that comes along with it. Part of being an adult (or making the transition to one) is taking responsibility for you actions.

Now, to answer your other questions. GDL drivers are allowed 8 demerits on your license. Your ticket carries 4 demerits with it ( Exceeding speed limit by 30 to 49 km/h ). So yes, you will be able to still drive, even after paying off the ticket (Provided you don't have any others).

If you weren't allowed to drive, I don't think the officer would have let you drive away after handing you the ticket.

just be glad he didnt clock you going 120+ cause that WILL raise your insurance rates cause its 6 demerits right there

false, your first ticket is always forgiven provided it is not a criminal charge like DUI, or driving dangerous.

i was going by this grid calculator, it showed an increase in rates if he was going 50 over, unless they changed it since that was put up...

depends on ur insurance company i believe.. my insurance lets 5 infractions before its raised substantially.
after a suspension and 3 tickets on my licence my insurance is up like 20%. so its not THAT bad but it still sucks.

u could probably get the ticket reduced if you have a good enough excuse as to why u were speeding. worth a shot i'd say.

I believe collision/comprehensive and whatnot insurance can raise whenever they feel like it to whatever they want.

PLPD however is on the grid. As it was explained to me (in a manner I don't understand), the first ticket puts you on the grid if you weren't already on it and that doesn't raise rates. Subsequent infractions will. How you can be "on the grid" and have no change bewilders me, but that's what I was told. I'm sure there's a reference online for it.

Correct.

The way that it works is the grid amount is the maximum an insurance company is allowed to charge you. There are some that will charge you less, but there are none that can legally charge you more.

Keeping that in mind, when you receive what is classed as a minor ticket (Which is the large majority of tickets) your maximum grid rate stays the same. If you receive more than one of these tickets, your maximum grid rate will then start to rise.

Now, it's completely up to the insurance company whether they choose to raise your rates if you were below the grid maximum, however every company may have a different policy. For instance, people here have mentioned they were told they get one "free" minor ticket.

The bottom line is that the grid rates are the MOST you will pay for insurance (PLPD). If you are lucky enough to be paying below, the insurance company is within their rights at any given time to raise you up to the maximum grid level, regardless of whether you've received an infraction.

did u actually get pulled over or was it a photo radar? if a photo radar dont worry about it no demerits or nothing like that

Ammo
yea i actually got pulled over and it was a radar ticket:(

Don_vito
thats ugly u shouldnt of stopped lol jk, the same thing happened to me on 118th i was going 80(had to take a leak) so i wasnt paying attention that they were hiding in one cresent with a radar ..didnt have my belt on either, luckily i had a clean record and he was a good guy and gave me a break (only gave me the speeding one) which was like $120 , no demerits were taken off

I got mine for doing 116 in an 80 zone. Never went to court, just have chosen to drive a little more cautiously(ie look harder for cop cars next time). No tickets since. Except those damn imperial parking tickets:mad:
